How to add LEDs to your controller ports Rev.1.0Published by Impwiz on 2006-01-01 Category: Hardware Mods/Addons | Page Views: 7,203
Disclaimer: I am in not way responsible if somehow you destroy your xbox or controller ports during this simple mod.
Recommended:
- 4 LEDs
- 4 Resistors
- Basic soldering skills
- Small flathead screwdriver
(optional) de-soldering braid or solder sucker
Ok, first UNPLUG your system, and unplug you controller ports from the motherboard. Remove the controller port screws with your torx screwdriver.
Gently pry the ports out by pulling up.
Take your small flathead and gently bend the two tabs up on the back of the controller ports metal housing:
Now here's were the de-solder braid or solder sucker come in handy. You will need to melt the solder that's holding the housing together. I just take a small flathead and wedge it in the crease while I put the soldering iron to the soldered joint. It just comes right apart. Repeat on other side. Repeat on your other 3 ports.
You should see the 5 wires inside now, and see where they are soldered to. We're only interested in the red and black wires.
Take you resistors and prep them like so:
Take the bent end of the resistor, and place it on top of where the red wire is soldered down. Solder the resistor to that spot. It might be easier for you to tin the resistor before trying to solder it to the red wire.
Moving right along, it's time to prep the LED. Just bent the legs over as
shown:
You will need to cut both leads on the LED. Cut the negitive lead (shortest) so it will touch the black wire solder joint in the port. Leave the positive lead (longest) for now. Once you have the negitive all trimmed up, solder it to the joint of the black wire. Make sure the LED sits directly in the middle of the port. You can bend it a little after you solder it down.
You should now be left with something like this:
Cut both the resistor lead and the positive LED lead so they will be far enough inside the port, so they won't touch the metal housing.
Solder the resitor an positive lead together.
Once again, make sure that the positive is not going to touch any metal once the housing is replaced. Just slip the housing on, bend the two tabs over in the back and resolder the front. Thats it, enjoy!
