Oh man where to start with this game.
I admit I''d never owned a hockey game before even though I am a rabid hockey fan (Go Sharks!).
Right from the opening screens, I find myself grinning ear to ear at the sequences before I get to push the start button.
Now the hard part. There is so much one can do with this game, you can start a franchise including working through salary caps, you can simply pick your team and go through a season. You can trade players and build a dream team.
You can even make your own team with your own logos.
The music took a little getting used to but I found most of it fit fairly well. The music during breaks due to offsides, icing and face offs was fun although I found NHL2K6 to be more true in the music played at the real arenas.
The ability to adjust skill levels helps those of us that are hockey savy while not being hockey console gaming savy and can be changed at any point.
The graphics are intense and the players movement for the most part very life like. Taking control of the goalie and making it work for you is tough.
I tended to let the machine control the goalie but I pretty much took control of all the other players as I felt I needed to. The control set up made switching players and setting up plays on the run easy.
The only annoying thing I seemed to run across is when there was an icing or offsides call, suddenly the playback is showing outstanding saves by a goalie while the announcers are talking about how well the goalie did. It''s an icing call, not a save!
Oh... and the hits! The hits I layed out put guys through the glass. I had guys sprawling across the ice and got way too many penalties for rough play. No the refs weren''t wrong, I just thought that cross checking a guy in to the board was a good thing. hehehe
There are more things to do in this game than I have time to try out, but I know one thing, once I started playing I had to take the Sharks to the cup. Bet you''d do the same thing for yours.
By the way, the closing sequence if you win are pretty cool too.
