---------------------------------------------------------------
When I get to step 11 the problem starts, here it is:
I did the hot-swap, it looks like it worked since the xboxhdm v1.9 said it was unlocked.
Ok here goes.
-I type in xboxhd then press enter.
-The next menu apears, and all options are enabled.
-I select option '1' to rebuild new hd from scratch
(I'm using the hd that came with the xbox).
-It says "the drive is unlocked, but the security mesure locking is still enabled, if you reboot the hd will be locked again, please do not reboot until you have a working xbox hd, press any key to abort/continue".
-Then it stays in the xboxhd prog, but does not continue like it should.
-I tryed out the xboxhd prog before with one of my old pc hard drive just to practice using the xboxhd prog, it worked great, it did all you said in the steps, it deleted the partions, built the partions, and formatted them.
-When I try to do this with my xbox hard drive, that was unlocked by hot-swaping, I says it found the drive, no errors, it says unlocked, try to rebuild the drvie, then it says drive is unlocked, but the locking feature is still on, please do not reboot pc until you have a working xbox hd, then stop does nothing and returns to the linux prompt.

ill just send pirrup a email now to get him to reply for you.
Ive personally never done the softmod hdd upgrade yet..
Thank you so much. Thanks to this tutorial I was able to restore my xbox. It took me 1 try with the hotswapping. It's very helpful if you have someone with you who's counting the seconds from a watch.

Thanks a million for this guide (and for the folks that made the software). This was the ONLY option that got me back up and running with my C drive missing all files, HDD locked and no save game hack to be able to get back to the UnleashedX screen!!!
One thing that I was doing wrong that wouldn't allow the xbox HDD to be unlocked prior to the hot swap, was I didn't have a display (or cable) plugged into the box out near my PC. That is a BAD THING. That causes a DIFFERENT error to occur (orange flashing LED) prior to the HDD being unlocked and subsequently erroring out at the DVD missing problem. You MUST HAVE A DISPLAY CABLE PLUGGED INTO YOUR BOX TO DO THIS (even if it isn't hooked up to anything). Also, I counted red LED flashes and tried between 12 and 15 flashes from first boot as a confirmed "it works" area for unplugging the drive from the IDE cable on the Xbox.
Thanks!

Hello I've made the CD and run the formating thing. But when I boot the xbox back up with evcerything plugged in it comes up with an error code 5 which is hard drive unlocked. Oviously I have messed up using the cd (only I could get typing in yes wrong) Is there an easy way to fix this with out getting a mod chip? Having this unlocked error does this mean that I can now just plug the drive in to a PC and copy files across? If so could I copy my brothers xbox hd across?

I assume you don't have your XBox's eeprom.bin handy to be able to relock the drive from the xboxhdm 1.9 tool??? Not sure how you got it unlocked to begin with, then...

Nope I don't have it handy. I backed up the hd but didn't copy it to my pc, thats the old infinte wisdom kicking in The only reason that I think that it is unlocked is that when I boot up the xbox it brings up the error 5. I've not had time to have a play with it yet. WIll I need the EPROM thing to lock my drive?

Yup. About the only thing you can do with an unlocked drive is to follow up with a full hardware mod so you can boot unlocked drives (and I have no idea how to get the eeprom.bin specifically from your unmodded XBox without a locked drive to boot to).
You MIGHT try to use AID 2.11 ISO to boot to, but I'm pretty sure it will fail from the Error 5 before you can get it booted and get config magic to run to read the eeprom.
I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out how you unlocked that drive without having the eeprom.bin at least at some point (you sure it isn't in the xboxhdm ISO you burnt)?
