i just powered from the 12v, and grounded on the 5v creating 7v.

im no expert at wiring , but im going to start school for it next semester. anyways, my hub ran off of 7.5v, so i just grounded on the 5v source of the molex(red wire). i powered from the 12v wire (yellow wire) which left me with seven. not all hubs are going to use the same specs as i have run over a few that are 9v, and so on. if you are going to go that route you need something called a voltage regulator (this nocks the voltage down from 12v safely and constantly). im not exactlly sure how to make one as i dont know that much about the wiring process either. you can find wiring diagrams if you google it, but they are complicated. sorry i couldnt be more help.

The way i have been explained that a voltage regulator works is lets say you are using a 5v power source (red molex) and you need to drop it down to 3.6, if you just wired it up using a resistor to drop the power it will produce a power drop to the PSU (i dont really know why, BTW psu is the power supply unit) and after time it can ruin your PSU. So you would run a wire from 5V to the voltage regulator and then a wire from the regulator to a resistor and then to the device(USB hub or what not) All the voltage regulator does is make sure that the power that its pulling from the PSU is ALWAYS 5V no more no less. You can get a vairable voltage regulator and somehow hook up some resistors to it and it would change the voltage comming off of the regulator, but i dont know how to do that. This is how it was explained to me, so if im wrong PLEASE correct me.
