I'm not a very experienced solderer. I've only really worked with wires. These things were so hard that I started cutting the legs off of the pinheader so They didn't stick out as much.

Also, when the modchip is enabled, the disc drive makes this weird quiet noise and couple of times when it is looking for a disc. When I unplug the IDE, the noise doesn't happen. That led me to believe the IDE activity cable might be crossing points but after I desoldered it the problem recurred.

Edit: even when I disconnect the power for the chip, christmas still happens.

Tried the 2.6 chip in my *working* XBOX and it failed exactly as the other one did.

Does this mean that the chip is dead? Or maybe it doesn't have a FlashBIOS on it. If it doesn't, then what do I do?

if you got the chip new it should have the 3.0.3 flash screen.

I got it off of modchips.org or something like that new. As I have said, it never works.

I find the prblem only happens when I have the HDD/LAN/D0 cable plugged in. Since it didn't work on my working XBOX, I think it must be something about the chip itself. Any ideas?

To me it sounds like you still don't have the pinheader soldered down correctly. If the Xbox only does Christmas lights when you have the D0 plugged in, then that means that most likely your pinheader is not soldered down correctly.

I would bet money on that before I said the chip was bad.

I forgot to test something else as well. It fails when I have power to the modchip as well, even if I don't have the other cable connected. I'm going to use my other XBOX's modchip to test the pinheader for errors.

Oh, and I checked the D0 with a multimeter and it was fine and there were no solder splashes.

So, to recap, these are the problems/consequences:

Christmas lights when modchip is powered on or the HDD/LAN/D0 cable is plugged in
DVD drive is quieter (suggesting power loss?)
Lights on the switch board are dimmed when mod is on

Do you have a voltage tester? If you can confirm points connected and current carried and still nothing, but the XBOX will boot with out it to MS dash then that in my mind confirms a failure to do with the chip.

The D0 isn't the problem here. We know that the D0 is correctly soldered because the Xbox will look for a bios on the LPC when you have the D0 wires plugged in (which is why you get the Christmas lights).

The problem in this instance is the pinheader that is soldered to the LPC. You should check if the pinheader is soldered correctly. When I installed my X3 CE my pinheader wasn't soldered correctly and I was having the same issues you are having right now.

OK, something very weird happened when I plugged my X3 from the old XBOX into the new XBOX. Firstly, the lights on the modchip flickered but the XBOX loaded fine. Then, the game loaded (after a huge amout of time thanks to a Thomson TGM600) and the screen went blank. After that, the lights on the front panel flashed orange. I thought that was about cooling problems...

I now think you are right about the LPC but the points are fine. I will recheck them and resolder bad ones.

OK, I reviewed my LPC today and I found 2 points that had not been soldered. I didn't remember them being disconnected, so I soldered them on and tryed the X2.6 chip again. Same thing, but the lights on the switches didn't flicker like before.

So now I am thinking it may be the BIOS on the chip. How can I reflash a bank and would there be any reason that there wasn't a FlashBIOS on the chip?

Did you buy the chip new or used? If you got it used, maybe the last person that tried to set it up screwed the chip up and tried to pawn it off on you.

Just try going through all of the different bank combinations and see if you can't get a flash bios screen to come up.

According to this thread, you may need a programmer or another Xbox to flash your chip. It sounds similar to your problems:http://team-xecuter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29879.

Yes, that is similar...

I have another XBOX, as I've said, with an X3 in it. I don't know what a programmer is, but I'm sure it has something to do with the FlashBIOS.

This is the programmer:http://www.divineo.com/magento/xbox/chips-development/x-programmer-v26.html. That would be the easiest way to flash it. Too bad it's out of stock and I don't know if they will get anymore in.

As for using another Xbox, the only thing I could think of doing is booting up the Xbox with your X3 CE, removing the X3 CE with the Xbox still on, placing the X2.6 onto the LPC pins, selecting the bank you want and then flashing it with EvoX. That sounds incredibly unsafe though, so I don't really know how you would do it with another Xbox.
