you probably know this, but still...
don't forget:
tv not hooked means that your video cable is on your Xbox,
but it's not connected to anything else (for output),
because if you don't connect the video cable to your Xbox,
it will shut down after little while,
and who knows what error code it gives...
also might mean no unlocked hdd...
enjoy

Progress, and another roadblock. I managed to get the drive unlocked with your trick GregToR. Thanks.
The problem though is that I've run into more trouble. When I go to option 1 in xboxhdm (Build a new Xbox HD from scratch) I get the following:
No xbox Partition table found on /dev/hda
Drive is not locked but locking is enabled.
Don't remove until you have built a working Xbox HD,
since rebooting will re-lock the drive.
Press any key to abort.
I've been looking around and it seems like a couple people are suggesting the hard drive is toast for this kind of error.
Any suggestions on where to go with that? Or if my only option is to build an eeprom reader (looks like it might be a little out of my ability range) or to attempt to chip the box (also pretty much out of my ability range, but worth a shot as a last attempt).
Thanks for all the help so far, and hopefully you have a little more advice left in you.

Did you put the MS dash files in the C and E folders of the HDM program?

I put them in the C folder like the tutorial said, but it didn't say anything about putting them in the E.
depends what you want,
if you just want original Ms Dash,
then just copy MS dash to C,
if you have a softmodded (single boot) MS dash,
copy it to C,
if you have a (dualboot) softmod which links your C to your E,
you will have to see that you softmodded MS dash is in C and
the hacked dash is in E,
-----
maybe you could try Xbox Harddisk Preparer (in Windows...),
I usually do that first (it formats the drive and zero's the partitions),
but then I use a hex editor (WinHex) to clone the hdd with a softmodded (unlocked) hdd...
(then after I locked it and placed it in the Xbox I format partitions with Unleashed toolset and ftp everything fresh and customized)
because Xboxhdm doesn't work with my pc (can't find cdrom error)...
