So yeah, trying to softmod my new xbox, I've tried 4 different usb drives, all different brands with no results. When I plug in the usb it lights up so I know the power connection is good. I decided to try using my android phone in usb mode and it detected it but came back saying the "Memory unit might be damaged" so I assume the data connection is good ? Im using a homemade USB to Xbox cord. I've tried 3 different break away cables and 2 different female usb ports. And everytime i plug it in it lights up but no pop-up to format it ?

First off,
Shit dude wtf were you thinking trying to format your phone? You could nuke it if it successfully formatted to FATX. FATX is an old file system that's not compatible with most modern technologies.
Secondly,
You could try purchasing a third party cable off of eBay or something. I have a Xbox to female USB cable that works fine for certain flash drives. I've found the cheaper the flash drive, the more likely it is to be formatted properly. Weird, but I'm not questioning it if it works.

First off,
Damn now I feel like an idoit , thought formatting the phone would only effect the SD Card.
Second off,
I found the breakaway cable I used for my very first ever softmod and... that one worked! Sorry for the false alarm guys!

It will only affect the SD card. Thats why people can safely use Blackberry and PSPs as an SD adapter to transfer saves. SD cards work best, every one Ive tried has worked.

I always like to err on the side of caution. There's always a chance that the Xbox could not recognize the SD card and go right to the SSD.
Also, would it be possible to use a USB to SD card adapter with the Xbox to format and SD card?

I tried a USB to SD card and the xbox did not detect it, perhaps a different adapter would work? The one I used was a very cheaply made one.

Theres no caution lol. The XBOX requires a FAT32 4096 Allocation to format. NO onboard memory meets this. Theres no fear what so ever. Michael Jackson has a better chance of knocking out Tyson.

For SD ChipsBank USB/SD readers work great (its what I use) PSP and Blackberry's are also confirmed as being XBOX friendly. Also check your format on the USB youve tried. If its not FAT32 Allocation 4096 formatted the XBOX will spit it out. You can also try USB FATX Formatter to juice the USB if the XBOX is being a douche. Its in the SID5.12 pack.

Hey SPPV Amiga warned me that he tried the SD card method and wound up having some problems with it.
Have you ever encountered the problems he had with it?
I am still very interested in making a softmod tutorial video and would like to share some good experienced advice with people new to softmodding.
Is there a particular USB drive, brand, model and size you would recommend that *always* works for softmodding? What a particular SD card, brand, model and size?
Thanks for the tips
Would you simply recommend people buy USB female to xbox male controller from ebay instead of trying to tell people to solder one together?

Amiga had a SD/USB adapter that didnt work. I have a shitload of SD from 256 to 4GB by pretty much everybody on the market. They ALL work in my ChipsBank reader. You cant brand hunt USB. Ive no shitting had 2 USB bought same day, same store, same brand, same size, 1 worked other didnt. Theres billions of revisions to the memory controller on flash drives so its all a crap shoot. WHere as SD appears to be static in its controller revisions. Problem becomes the adapter so its like finding a USB drive all over again. Only brabds I can stamp are as USB/SD adapters and thats ChipsBank, PSP and BlackBerry

That list shouldnt even be posted Legendary. Its VERY misleading. Many USB have same model but different controller which fails them. People search for this "model" only to find out it doesnt work. You know better than anybody about the douche baggery of memory controllers on USB lol. USB "A" has 5 revisions, revision is not listed on package, submitter doesnt know revision number=4 out of five might get fucked LMAO. Thats why I try to not say this brand or that brand cause we cant. Ive seen it first hand how 2 USB that seem identical in all respects, one works, one fails like a crack whore.
