Ok here's a strange one... (what else is new from me).
I'm intermittently getting an error 7 = hdd timeout (usually right after crashing a game with a DDE - game running on HD so no DVD involved.) When I reboot (power cycle) I usually get an error 7 but then after a few trys things seem to work a while (or not).
This is the second harddrive (of a different brand Maxtor then WD) to exhibit the same symptoms. I actually changed drives and mnfg's just to figure out what was wrong - figuring it was the other drive that was the problem.
I have changed out the IDE cable for a very nice clean one from another of my xboxen so it's not the cable. I've also made sure it's nice and snug in it's MB and DVD connections.
The system is running nice and cool - 12 V fan mod + Arctic 5 = 120F CPU 110F MB (sorry I can't go C) - can't tell the HD temp but the cooling is obviously doing something good for the MB and CPU.
Does any of this give anyone any thoughts? insight much appreciated.

Well....Let me see- the only reason you should get an error 7 you already stated above.
Your sure its not the IDE cables,
it MIGHT be the hard drives
You say its not the Fan
The IDE is fit nice and snug into the Mother board- hmmm...i wonder why its not working.
Maybe the Motherboard has issues (its not to uncommen) But otherwise im not sure why it would do that.
I'll try to bump this topic up so other admins can have a look- mainly the hardware related guys (Mod God)
so- lets see what they have to say- but untill then im going to do some research on the Error 7- see why its doing that smoetimes.
I'll be back with some results

Looking up with more resaerch the only other thing i can suggest if its not the IDE cable or the Fan- the power suppy might be bad- which is VERY COMMEN!! Trust me- i've had about 11 customers in TOTAL since i began modding (Around FEB) and its all beacusse of power supply related issues- the power supplys are very bad- so you know. Try hooking up a friends (Make sure its the right type- There are 1 row LPC and 2 row LPC Oower supplys- Version 1.6 take a completely diffferent one.
I think its versions 1.0 are different than 1.2-1.5,
Try it if you can- If you dont, i have a power supply i'll sell you cheap- Brand new- still in the box and plastic (i orderd two on accident from our EXCELLETN Site Diveno.com)
well tell me what you find out,

I have another motherboard (actually a whole unmodded 1.3 Xbox that is sitting on a shelf doing nothing at the moment. I can try using it's power supply first.
If that doesn't help and I want to try it's MB then I just need to MOD it right? The eeprom is keyed to the HD correct? So I need to get it's eeprom into a .bin and gen the HD key. Then unlock the HD and relock it with the new key. Sound right?
Ok... sounds like I've got a couple more steps to take.

Possibly found the problem. The fan uses a pass-through connector where the normal HD power plugs into it and then it plugs into the HD with a split to power the fan. It didn't seem to have the tightest connection between the original power lead and the pass-through. I tweaked it and it seems to be happier for the moment. It could make sense that this is the problem since. I'll report back when I have some time under it's belt testing it.

It's been almost a week since I 'ajdusted' the fan/HD power passthrough and no errors. I'm pretty confident at this point that's what it was. I guess the lesson is that even if things 'look' connected - sometimes they aren't very well connected. ;)
I'm going to be switching fans to a variable speed fan now that I have everything working right (you know, so I can break something... I don't really need a variable speed fan but everything is working so well now that I'm bored with it.)
