If you made a back up of your friends HDD, now would be the time to use it. Hopefully you put it on your computer just in case (if not, you should remember to do so in the future). Simply FTP it back to his xbox.
However if you did not make a back up this is what I would recommend.
I am new to softmodding so please read this over and see if it makes sense. If for some reason you don't think you can do this don't. Wait for a better response.
You might be able to place a M$ dash on it by following these instructions, however do so at your own risk.
1. you need the AID on your computer. uniso the aid.iso to the recreate folder.
2. place his HDD in your xbox, and set up a network to FTP from your computer.
3. Go into the recreate folder from AID, and then into the temp folder. Now open the files folder, then Dash and then open the m$-c.zip.
4. FTP the contents of that folder to your friends HDD. That will ensure a M$ dash is properly on his xbox _________________ XBOX v1.3:

I think your response is on the right track....put his HD in your xbox with the chip enabled, then you can use the AID (on dvd-r) and it has options for restoring the original xbox (C drive to factory condition. IF you have save games ect make sure you FTP first to get those outta there. Also make sure you get the EEPROM BEFORE YOU RESTORE THE C: DRIVE. Then after you restore the drive (while still in your modded machine) FTP the EEPROM backup and save games ect onto the HD. Then put it back in your buddies box and yuo can start from scratch. I think this will work better as just replacing the dash may not fix your problem. The new C: from AID will have the up to date microsoft dash to start with when you begin the softmod (again). Hope that helps and reply if it works! _________________ Xbox v1.0

Honestly, if the hard drive is chirping, it almost sounds like a hardware failure, not a mistake with the softmod/dashboard. Not sure, another thing, it will be locked to the current xbox, you probably won't be able to remove it and put it in your xbox to check it out. I would almost suggest contacting M$ and seeing about a replacement box, and claim the hard drive failed b/c it is chirping. Being a 1.0 though, it may be better to just install a chip, and a large hard drive. It's really hard to say exactly what to do from this point. _________________
