Here is how you will apply this jewel. First, tools and items you will need that you will need. (besides the basics to open the machine)

You will notice the little half circles of velcro that are on the ring. This is how you are going to adhere the ring to the underside of the case top. You will need to purchase some velco rings from any craft store. I got those from Wal-Mart. I didn't have any of the other side left. I think they cost me about $2.00

You will need a butter knife, thin as possible.

Cotton balls, or cotton pads.

Acetone, paint thinner, gasoline, anything to take paint off of the jewel that you are removing.

Hole Saw. This is a round tool that fits on your drill so you can cut perfect holes in items. Just like used for cutting door knob holes in doors. Get one that is 2.5 inches.

Glue gun and glue sticks.

Blow Dryer.

Getting the Jewel Off.

Once you have your case top off, flip it upside down. You'll notice the metal RF Shield is in the way, get a flat head screwdriver and bend back the little clips that are holding it onto the Posts. Then, you can easily pry it off.

Now, grab a blow dryer and heat up the underside of the case where the jewel sits. Heat it up good. Move it around, don't hold in one spot or you may warp the case. It will take a lot, but still can happen. You are going to heat it up for about 5 minutes or so.

Once it's heated up pretty good, try prying gently with the butter knife. Be sure not to chip the jewel. Grab the knife at the very tip and hold it tight. Try to push in a down and inward motion. The glue under the jewel is thin at the sides. Start next to the X in the word Xbox and push toward the middle of the jewel.

Once you are able to get the knife pushed about 1/2 inch into the underside of the jewel, move it back and forth until the jewel is completely off.

You will have a lot of black gunk/adhesive left on the backside of the jewel.

Take your jewel and put in the freezer for an hour or so. This will enable you to scrape off the remaining glue. As the glue freezes it becomes brittle and should come off easily. If not, I have used Oven Cleaner to weaken the black gunk/adhesive.

To clear the jewel, you can use acetone, gas, pain thinner, just whatever you use, use it sparingly. Take a few wipes then rinse with water. Acetone can harm acrylic if left on too long. That's why I rinse. When I used paint thinner it came off the easiest. Gas didn't do too poorly either. This is the toughest part of the mod. Getting that darn jewel clear.

Now, get your drill and a regular drill bit an drill a hole in the center of the case. This will act as a guide for the hole saw.

Now, put the hole saw on your drill and drill your larger hole.

Once you are finished cutting hole, scrape off any melted plastic. You want your surface around the hole to be smooth.

Now, you glue your cleared jewel in place. Use the glue sparingly on the very edge of the lip of the hole You will see exactly how much room the jewel clings too. Put the jewel down first so you get an idea of where to put the glue. Just put enough down to make the jewel stick, and not so much so you can see tons of glue. Remember, the ring is clear so you will see glue. This is why I like the expensive clear jewels that have a lip on them. These just stick down insde the hole nicely leaving no evidence of glue.

Once the jewel is on and dry, now flip case top over and put your little velcro circles down so you can stick the jewel ring to it. Stick your ring on and now put back together....viola!

This blue one was one of the exact same rings. I used a piano black jewel ring. It hides the glue better, but isn't as bright as the clear...obviously.

let me know if you need any more help.

Wow ModGod,

When you said you were going to whip together a "little" tutorial I wasn't quite expecting something quite so complete. I am literally shocked and amazed that you went through so much trouble to help me out. Keep in mind, that this is going to be quite a challenge for me, I've never done a case mod before and I didn't quite realize that it was so difficult but I'm sure I'll figure it out.

I only have a few questions. What exactly did you use to cut out the underside of the top of the case? Just a sharp knife or some saw? I'll probably just end up using paint thinner to clear the jewel so I shouldn't have any problems. Also, what size of drill bit should I use to drill the first hole into the case? Thank you so much for putting in the time to explain everything in DETAIL for me. I can't thank you enough.

I also hope that you daughter had a great birthday! Thanks again!

the first size drill bit shouldn't matter as its just a pilot hole for the tip of the big ol hole cutting bit

edit: excellent tut btw as this is the next mod i want to do Smile

Hey bud, no problem. I just took some more pics for you in hopes that this will help you a little more.

I'm a little confused about what you mean about cutting the underside of the case top. As far as the underside of the case when you first open it, you have a metal shield. I just remove that shield first. Let me know if you understand what I mean. Then, I heat up the underside of the case right in the middle. This heats up the glue that is holding the jewel on the top of the case. The case plastic is thinner than the jewel, so I heat from the underside instead of the topside.

Here is what the case top looks like with the shielding in place. When you remove the shielding you will see an indentation so you know where the jewel is on the top side. That is where I focus the heat from the blow dryer.

I also put red circles around the clip areas. These are the clips I was talking about that you use a screw driver to bend backward so you can pull/pry the metal rf shielding off.

This next image is the product I used to actually cut the hole through the case. I drill from the top, not the bottom. There is no cutting on the underside of the case. The hole saw cuts the hole from the top.

You need to use the 2.5 inch hole saw. I just use the drill bit that came with it to drill the guide hole. The hole saw comes apart. There are three pieces. The saw, bit with threaded end, and a nut to hold it together.

Here is the packaging:

Here is the drill bit piece of the hole saw:

Here is the hole saw part, this is what actually does the cutting. I'll post a few pics from differnt angles.

And, here is what it looks like all put together before it's inserted into the drill for drilling.

Let me know if that answered your question. When you attach the "hole saw" to the drill, you just lay the case top down on a flat surface. Put the drill bit that is attached to the hole saw in the hole guide you already drilled out. Then, while holding the case top firmly just let her rip. It will only take about seven seconds to drill the large hole out.

Later bud,

i think he means to cut a hole in the metal sheild.

do you just discard the metal sheild or do you cut a hole in it?

I discard it.

I have never kept the RF Shielding after doing a jewel ring mod.

Awsome tut modgod. I wish I thought of using a hole saw on my jewel. But now I know. And as they say on GI Joe... "Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!"

Personally tho I prefer the freezing the whole top method to remove the jewel. It takes longer, but I find it funny (dont ask why).
After the Top has been sitting in the freezer overnight Just take a hammer, hold the case on the side, and whack the bottom one good time. I like seeing the jewel fly across the carpet! Im FREE!!!

Also, Last jewel I cleared out (v1.6) I tried to use acetone like I did the time before this (v1.0). The acetone started to take off the silver (I was trying to avoid it) but didnt even TOUCH the green. I must have used 1/4 the bottle. I came to the idea that the green was actually a layer of plastic and had to sand it off. In the end it all turned out well and my jewel is nice and clean. If anyone would care to see the pics Ill post them. Its more of a before (after I sanded it) and after (after I wetsanded and polished it) Ill also talk about how I did it too. Really tho the only diffrence between this and the tut I wrote awhile back (about how to remove scratches) is the wetsanding.

Really tho, I think that the scene needed a outlined tut on removing the jewel, Most of what Ive seen up to this point is just casual suggestions.

I have ran into a couple jewels that were the same way. I couldn't get the green off very easily either. One jewel, as soon as the gasoline hit it, it flaked off in an instant...was very wild how quick it came off.

I have also heard of people using the freezing method too... I always used the blow dryer since I wanted it off in a hurry.

It's good to have options though..whichever method you feel comfortable with, that's the way to go.

I didn't use a hole saw my first jewel either....but luckily it was a jewel that hit the sloppy cutting that I had to do. I used a rotozip tool. It wasn't a perfect hole by any stretch of the means, but the jewel's outter lip hid it nicely.

later all

I used my drafting tools to make a paper ring about 2mm thick. It ended up looking nice, but the Hole cutter is hella faster.

Hey ModGod,

I still can't believe how in depth you guys went. I haven't even tried starting yet until I get all the tools because I'm way too much of an inpatient person to start and then wait to get all the tools. But, I did have a few more questions....

1.) Using the 2.5 inch hole saw (bit), will that create enough of a lip for the jewel to rest on and glue to?

2.) I'm probably going to use either Acetone or paint thinner (probably paint thinner) to remove the green. If it doesn't come off with either of those two methods, is there any other way to get it off besides sanding? Also is there some cheap polishing crap that I can use to clean it up afterwards?

Othe than that I should be able to get it going. I'll post a thread in the Case Modding area with some pictures of it once I get it completed. I'm really excited about getting this done. Thanks again for all the help!

Yeah, it leaves just enough Smile

If you want to go smaller, that's up to you. I have always used the 2.5"

Also, check out the clear jewel that I highly recommend. Yes, they are expensive (25 bucks with shipping) but they are awesome.

The jewel just slides down into the hole and has a ledge/lip type of overhang that will keep it from falling down into the machine. It hides any imperfectiosn in your cut (even though you will have a perfect hole) and you can put the adhesive on the side of the jewel not the lip part...

I get them at www.shop.craxion.com , but hopefully will be able to find a way to get them to people cheaper. Working on it as we speak.
