Basically, the easiest way is to open the machine. Open it up and look at the video chip. It's located toward the back of the xbox. If you need a picture, let me know. But, there are only so many chips big enough to have words on them.
The chip will either say:
Conexant which is 1.0 to a 1.3. If you have an extra fan, you most likely have 1.0.
Focus is 1.4 or 1.5. There aren't may 1.5's, so it's most likely a 1.4. You can use a multi-meter to see if you have continuity at the number 2 hole on the LPC and a ground. If you do, it's a 1.4 if not it's a 1.5. I don't fully expect you to understand that right now..lol.
Xcalibur is a 1.6, and the meanest, ugliest, most hateful chip to all modders...HA.
If you need more help let me know.

Or you could do what realmccloy said....
I honestly didn't know all that. But it was obvious when I opened the case that I had the 1.0. Every damn hole filled with solder.... hahaha
At least I didn't have to worry about dust or dirt. Geez........ _________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

Yeah, solderless installers love the 1.0 machines...lol. I always have to desolder though because I always use the pin header install. I have gotten quite good at desoldering...
I can desolder the LPC holes in about two minutes. I went and bought one of those fancy-shmancy desoldering irons with the big pump contraption...jesus, that thing sucked. I just use desoldering braid and a 25watt iron...soaks it up fine.
The two versions that give you the most trouble discerning between are the 1.2 versus the 1.3 and the 1.4 versus the 1.5. They look identical! You can use the serial method to determine difference between 1.2 and 1.3 but you have to use a multi-meter to tell the difference between 1.4 and 1.5.
I got bit on that one time though. I checked for continuity on a mobo witha focus chip and I had it, so I assumed it was a 1.4. I chipped it and when I turned it on I had no power to the chip. I had to add the two extra wires like the 1.5 install and it worked. It was the only time that heppend.
later all
