Post subject: Help with Adding Emulators and Roms Please

Hello, I'm brand new to softmodding. Took me all summer to get this far, and now I am stumped once again. My Xbox is softmodded with the UnleashX dash not the evolution one. I installed filezilla and five emulators and about 20 games or so. I connected the Xbox to Filezilla and opened up the E:/ area (Don't know the lingo, sorry) and transferred all the emulators and roms straight into the E file. They arent in any specific folder within there, they are just floating around. When I look for emulators or games on the xbox, it shows both are empty. When I go into the xbox's files from the console and navigate to E, all the emulators and roms are there, but like I said, are not in any specific file within E. Im so close, and I'm giving this to my Dad for christmas (17 days from now) Any help would be much appreciated. Im not well versed in computer terms so work with me Embarassed

It is actually quite simple.

Go to the UnleashX File Explorer as I think you already know how to do. Then click on the E:\drive.

Now press the White button on the controller to bring up the context menu. Navigate down the options using the D-pad to New Folder. Click on that and using the virtual keyboard create a new folder named Emulators.

Once done click to open that new, empty Emulators folder and carefully select and transfer all those scattered emulators into it. Most of them should already include a folder for their own ROMS so transfer any that you have into those in a similar manner.

Now exit the File Explorer and I suggest shut down and restart rather than reboot. Once back on your UnleashX main dash the start menu should now have a new Emulators options. Click on it to see the contents and check that it works.

If it doesn't or there is any emulator in the folder missing report back here.

That does sound really simple, and thanks for going into detail. I looked in the emulators and I didn't see any folders for the roms to go into. I went ahead and put all the emulators into a folder, but they still don't come up in the emulators section on the home screen. Can this all be done on the Xbox or do I have to have it still plugged in to FileZilla? Thanks ahead of time Very Happy

All is best done on the Xbox using the UnleashX dash File Explorer. Trying to do it via Filezilla just adds an extra layer of potential problem.

The UnleashX File Explorer is one of the main reasons to use the UnleashX dash. The GUI is as good as it gets on the Xbox: clean, simple yet multifunctional.

The emulators should be in a folder named "Emulators" on the root of the E:\drive ie. not in Apps or any other folder. If you have that E:\ Emulators folder and the emulators are now all in it in it then the most likely problem is that you either haven't unzipped them or that whoever zipped or unzipped the files put them inside another folder. It is easily done when using some zipping tools.

So make sure each emulator is only in one level of folder eg. E:\Emulators > NeoGenesis > contents and NOT E:\Emulators > NeoGenesis > NeoGenesis > contents.

Thanks for all your help, hope I'm not annoying. Are the emulators supposed to be .Zip files? Only four of them are, the other two are not and I cannot click on them and open them. I can open the .zip files. There aren't any folders in them to insert the roms and I'm not sure how to make any. I'll include some pictures. Also, a side note and stupid question: I put Nintendo roms into the Nintendo emulator, atari games into the Atari emulator, etc right? Once I figure out how to get files in there.

Yes, the roms can be zipped or unzipped so don't worry about that. Basically all you want to do is copy the files to the correct /ROMS/ folder for each emulator.

An alternative to installing the Roms manually, you could download the Auto Installer Deluxe and add-on ROM packs.. Basically you download the AID and burn it to a DVD with the add-on rom pack.. THen you can just install any roms you like booting Auto Installer Deluxe at anytime..

I'm positive the ROM Add-on packs are available on the Xbox-HQ VIP FTP Server.. You can learn more about that here:

XboxHQ VIP FTP Servers:

Unfortunately the ROM packs are too large to offer as a direct download in our VIP Downloads area - http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/downloadsvip.html

Yes, that's exactly how to do it.. The roms need to go into specific folders.. Once you figure that out you should be set.

enjoy the sites,

I was going to suggest you attach a screenshot from the UnleashX File Manager because that is often the quickest way of finding out what is wrong. That is indeed the case here.

Two 'classic' errors. The emulators inside E:\Emulators must be unzipped. Maybe if you're using the XBMC dash it can handle compressed files (zip/rar) but with UnleashX they need to be unzipped.

The UX File Manager can do this for you: click on the zipped folder and it will show you the contents in list form. Using the White controller button bring up the UX Context menu and choose "Extract all files" or "Extract All Files to..." and in the latter case specify the location or name a new folder you want them to be unzipped too. The GUI for the latter isn't as intuiative as it could be as you may need or want to back out of the default folder location to extract it somewhere else (use the Back Button).

I'd always recommend extracting to a TMP (temporary folder) to avoid mishaps like accidentally unzipping a huge application to the root of the E:\drive and then having to go through that cleaning up the mess.

Of course the other option is doing the unzip/raring on the PC before FTPing which in this case, because of the other problem I explain below, would be the best solution.

Lets assume you have worked out how to unzip stuff on the Xbox or PC. If you put that unzipped folder in E:\Emulators it should, at last, be available from Emulators in the main UX menu.

The other problem you have with the SurrealC64 and ZSnexBox is that they're not ordinary zipped files they're 7Zipped (a similar but different file compression format) indicated by the .7z extension.

The Xbox can not extract these, that has to be done on PC and only by using the 7Zip program.

It is a tool everybody using a Xbox should have as it can both archive in zip or its own 7Zip format but also unzips both types and, most usefully, RAR files too. A lot of download places where you'll find Xbox stuff use a mix of Zip, 7Zip and RAR. Some use 7Zip compression almost exclusively.

BTW UnleashX will also unRAR files.

Anyway as you're going to have to do that on the PC you might as well use 7Zip to extract those other standard zipped emulators too then FTP all the now decompressed emulators back to the Xbox.

As for the emulators/ROMS issue I'm not so certain of my ground. I'm no expert in this area. Most of my ROMS and some of my emulators came with SPPV's SID 5 Babylon and several other comprehensive softmod installers I've raided for such stuff over the years. So it might be they were pre-set up with ROM folders. However AFAIK like almost anything else used with the UX dash they should not be zipped.

The NeoGenesis set-up I have includes the folder "sgenroms" and the other emulators I have ROMs for include just a folder named ROMS. PCSXBox which I've not used doesn't contain a ROMs folder but does include "pcxcds". That is most likely where you'd put the ROMs but you'd need somone else to confirm that.

I would suspect that if you launch any emulator it is going to ask you for the path/location of the ROMS if one isn't already specified. In that case you'd just create a named folder inside the emulator (or elsewhere) and put your ROMs in that.

Thanks, I finally got it to work! There's still a few small issues, but it works nonetheless. The N64 emulator doesn't work. When I try to boot it up (it shows up in the emulators section) it just crashes and puts me back on the home screen. Also, a single rom doesn't work (super bomber man 4) I'm guessing there's nothing I can do about these, so its no big deal. Lastly, none of the games come up in the "gamesl section, I have to go into the emulator to run them. Is this normal? Thanks for all your help btw Smile

It depends where you store the games where they are shown in the menus.

If you put something in E:\Games it will only be listed if it is in a single level folder and that contains a "default.xbe".

That is the case for everything else too, like applications in E:\Apps. They must have a default.xbe or they won't be displayed in the UX menu.

If you want all your emulator games listed in the main menu you'd probably be best off creating a new ROMS folder and editing the Config.xml to create a new ROMS menu item pointing at that folder. That's what I did for the homebrew games I have: I simply made a folder called "GamesHomeBrew" ans put them in that. But they launch direct so that makes sense.

But doing that in the case of games for emulators you wouldn't be able to just launch the games. You always need launch the emulator first. Also you'd need to point the emulator at the new path to the ROMs folder unless you wanted to have two copies of every ROM ie. one in the menu and one inside the emulator.

You could put in a shortcut.xbe direct to each individual game in the Emulators folders but whilst if would list the game in the UX menu it still wouldn't launch the emulator first. So almost completely pointless.

There may be a way you could do that with more sophistcated Config.xml editing but that is beyond my limited knowledge of such matters.

But even if it can be done I don't think it would make it any simpler than going to Emulators launching the emulator and viewing the games listed there for it.
