Hi Guys,

I know there is someone out there that can help me out...

I'm VERY new to the Xbox scene, as in 2015 new. I really missed out on this great console. I was excited to get this project started and now I've hit some bumps worthy of asking for help.

I softmodded my box with SID5.11 using UnleashX dual boot with the MS dash. Everything seemed to go as expected, so I moved on to the next part of the project to upgrade the HDD to 2TB. I had difficulty getting chimp to run, which I think was a result of not having an OEM controller (which I have now) and I think I have a v1.6 box.

I finally got around to getting chimp to load using something called "the LUD disc." The screen wouldn't load on my TV, but I was able to telnet, easy enough. I go through the process, everything looks great, switch out HDD to boot new 2TB drive and I get error 13. If I try to power up the box using the eject button, I get error 14. I switch back to stock HDD, everything boots great.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Yes.

Using Telenet + Chimp is now considered an almost medievel method of cloning a v1.6 Xbox HDD. It was old when I first started on this malarkey 8 years ago. Never used it, thankfully never needed to and therefore I can only guess at what may have caused the errors you're getting.

The recommended method of cloning a Xbox HDD is to use Chimp2618 and specifically the installed version. It also can be found in a LUD version which, in my experience, is a pain to use.

Chimp2618 is the universal Chimp, it will work the same way with all Xbox versions including the v1.6. There are plenty of tutorials around on how to use it but essentially it is no different to earlier Chimp versions. This is the basic one I've always refered too:-

CHIMP 2618

This program runs entirely on your modded Xbox (including v1.6 models without having to use Telnet) to allow you to hotswap the internal hard disk with another, larger, model.

You'll need a torx 10, 15 and 20 screwdriver set, a molex power splitter, a larger IDE hard disk and an official Microsoft controller, not a third party one!

FTP the Chimp2168 folder into your E:\Apps folder on your Xbox. Copy the LinuxBoot.cfg file into the root of the E:\ drive.

It should have been done already but if not ensure you've backed up your EEPROM to E:\Backup and to external storage (PC) as well just for safety.

Power off your Xbox and open it up. Connect the molex splitter between both your existing and new hard disks. Set the new hard disk's jumper to Slave. Power up.

With your Xbox on and idle in the dashboard, carefully and cleanly unplug the IDE ribbon cable from the DVD drive and plug it into the new hard disk.

Boot Chimp2618.

Select the option to confirm both drives are detected.

Select the option to clone your existing files over to the new drive. Once that has completed, select the option to lock the new cloned disk ie. which, of course, is still the Slave drive.

When finished, power off. Put the IDE ribbon back onto the DVD drive and remove the old hard disk. Install the new locked one in its place with the jumpers reset to Master or Cable Select.

Power on!

Now either use Chimp2618 again or, probably better with a very large HDD, the most recent XBPartitioner to format the extended partitions (F:\ and G:\) correctly. That should be it although do remember to enable F:\ and G:\ from within your dashboard's menus too.

BTW I do suggest using UnleashX in preference to EvoX or any of the older dashes if you're not going down the whole XBMC route.

Hi ArchAngle,

I appreciate the response. I'm quite positive the LUD disc I mentioned using is using the CHIMP version you mentioned. The issue with my machine was it would not display CHIMP on my TV, so I had to telnet to actually see what was happening. That's OK, I'm comfortable with that part. I might go ahead and use CHIMP2618 directly from the stock HDD later, but I would have to still use telnet to see anything and I think I'll get the same result since I actually used both CHIMP as well as XBOXHDM 1.9 and I still get the same result. Error 13/14. I can put a retail disc in and get error 05 on boot. I am quite certain I locked the drive in both CHIMP as well as XBOXHDM, but I'm going to keep working at it. Any additional suggestions are appreciated.

For what it's worth, it's a WD black drive, which shouldn't have issues spinning up quickly enough... I am likely going to try a different, smaller HDD to rule out the IDE -> SATA adapter I'm using, but I have read others have had success using the same adapter I have.

Thanks!

OK, actually... I communicated something incorrectly in the last post... If I run CHIMP2618 directly from the E drive, it gets stuck on:
Booting...

Boot: Loading kernel '/Apps/chimp2618/linux265'... [ok]
Boot: Loading initrd '/Apps/chimp2618/initrd.gz'... [ok]

THAT'S why I had no other choice but to run CHIMP from the previously mentioned disc.

I know I'm the one bumping my own thread, but I want to update my findings for the time being:

I cloned to another (small capacity) IDE drive through my mentioned process and it works as expected. I cloned to the 2TB drive again and get the errors. It is documented my IDE to SATA adapter works for Xbox, so maybe it's my drive? I found a similar drive with almost the same specs that is documented to work, but my model number is a little off, so who knows. The model I have is WD2003FZEX. I'm pretty sure it's "lockable" since I had to manually unlock it using XBOXHDM 1.9 earlier, but there is definitely an issue with either the HDD, the adapter, the Xbox, me, or a combination of all.

I will get another (small capacity) SATA drive shortly and see if I can get it to work, then it would seem the HDD is the culprit.

Any known 2TB drives that I can currently purchase from Newegg or Amazon that anyone can confirm works?

I should have realised you were using a a SATA HDD with adapter.

That is most likely to be the cause of some of the problems even if you've had advice that the adapter you're using is compatible. Xboxes are notoriously picky about the devices which work with them.

Not sure why Chimp won't at least boot with the 2TB drive attached. Perhaps it needs to identify the devices attached as it boots and if it is getting the wrong or no response from the SATA HDD it stalls. Just a guess though.

Sorry but large HDDs are foreign territory for me as regards the Xbox. Biggest I use is 160GB and the other two Xboxes I've upgraded both have 120GB ones.

I think you're right. I tried an 80GB SATA HDD using the adapter and still got the same results. I purchased my adapter on amazon and there are comments in the ratings that they got it to work on xbox, but digging a little deeper, I see that the picture on the item description is different from the one I received and customers have put their images on there as well and they have different adapters as well. So basically, I'm a victim of inconsistent products being sold under the same part number. I will begin my search for a consistent adapter that will work.

It's fast enough to clone through CHIMP, but not fast enough to boot up before it errors out.

That's the best educated guess I've got.

Make note of the jumper positions on those SATA to IDE adapters. You must ensure that you are setting the jumpers to MASTER or CABLE SELECT. Those adapters can be a PITA but I have used a few in my day and they work a treat.

**EDIT**

I should also note that on all of the adapters I've used, I put some padding between the adapter PCB and the hard drive it was connected to since the solder joints would touch the disk. Make sure that you are doing something like this as well.

I am in the same boat your are in. I have tried using 2 different HDD's but I can't get my Xbox working with them after using Chimp. One is a Seagate Barracuda 160GB SATA HDD and the other is a Western Digital WD1002FAEX SATAIII 6Gb/s HDD. I think they are both locked/lockable, but I don't know for sure. Chimp seemed to have worked when cloning my original HDD though. I have made a thread here: http://www.xbmc4xbox.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=4533

Maybe that can help you as it sounds like we have the same problem.

I did read on this thread that "If upgrading using a SATA adapter, you may require an 80 PIN UDMA66/133 cable. If you are able to clone and lock as a slave, but get an Error 13 when you change the new drive to master and boot, you will require this." http://www.xbmc4xbox.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2040

I am going to try messing around with XboxHDM to see if both the HDD's I tried locked. I have also tried looking on Ebay for one of those cables, but the trick is finding one long enough. Note that it would be 40-PIN 80 wire.

EDIT: I think both HDD's did lock successfully in Chimp, because when I try to use either one in my desktop pc (I took out the HDD with my Windows OS.) and turn it on, I get a message asking me to type in a password to unlock the drive. And if I don't, it says the drive will remain locked.

It sounds like from reading one source that I can't use XboxHDM is my computer doesn't have an IDE HDD connection. I have been trying to just plug in the Western Digital HDD I want to use via SATA connection in my desktop pc. Is that why I get the error, "Linux CD not found. Please insert disc."? Can I not use XboxHDM then?

If I want to restore one of these drives to factory defaults so I can use it regularly with my desktop PC again, how do I go about doing that?

The solution to that last question is not as easy as it sounds. I have only used a WinXP laptop for this which I have to connect to the HDD using a USB external enclosure. Bear that in mind as it might be different for a desktop and other Windows OS, particularly if you can connect it up internally by IDE or SATA.

Anyway first the HDD must be unlocked by the Xbox it was locked with. Chimp or Configmagic will do that. But make sure this is what you want to do because once unlocked it can't be used with any softmoded Xbox until it is relocked and this requires that you have the EEPROM

It should have been done already but before unlocking backup the EEPROM from the Xbox to PC by FTPing. Also backup anything else on the HDD you want to save as the reformatting involved will wipe the HDDs contents.

Now once you unlocked it you'd expect the PC to see the HDD but the problem can be that as it is formatted to FATX often it won't. If it won't see it in My Computer how can you reformat it?

What you need to do is go into to Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disc Mnagement (Local).

The attached HDD should be shown there but will be displayed with black graphics and likely shown as a removable mass storage device or something like that.

You need to Initialise it (I think from the right mouse context menu) then once that is confirmed use the Format option which should bring up the Windows Partition Wizard. With that you use the option to create just one partition and format it to NFTS or FAT32.

Depending on the size this can take a long time but once done on reboot the PC should now see the now wiped HDD.
