Well if you have an xbox and an ide pc u can use xboxhdm to clone your harddrive and pass it to his harddrive then proceed to softmodding.

sounds good to me....My xbox is already soft-modded, so I presume I can do without the soft-modding?

At this point, I'd rebuild an xbox hard drive image using a program such as xboxhdm.

You can use SPPV's autobuilder or his newer Babylon program.

All you'll need is that console's EEPROM file backed up. I sure hope you have that file for your friend's console somewhere on your computer. It's very easy to reformat and partition and xbox hard drive with all the critical C drive files, provided you have the EEPROM.bin file.

No such luck....the C drive was wiped before I even got hold of it.....As a matter of interest....When using SID from the Splinter Cell disk, you have an option to backup the eprom...do you happen to know where it stores it, the backup that is?
Only ask since I presume the c drive was wiped whilst somebody was trying to soft-mod it and if he had backed up the eprom......
Knowing my lucfk it probably saves the backup to the C drive Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Hmm haven't heard of that. Not sure if that product is for real.

Basically the EEPROM.bin key is unique to each xbox. You can't put a softmod hard drive from one xbox into another console.

It is possible to physically remove the eeprom chip from one console and use it to replace another one in a different console.

I am getting bogged down a bit here....bear with my ignorance if you would...
Is the eeprom.bin just the key to lock and unlock the hard drive? or is there more to it than that?
The device he is selling will apparently read the key for the hard drive from the chip and allow you to change the new .drive to fit the xbox

Yeah the EEPROM.bin file is what softmodded consoles need for locking and unlocking the hard drive. It is unique for each console. So you can't use an EEPROM.bin file from one console use it to partition and format in another.

Think of it as a security measure M$ put in place for their consoles.

Now as far as the EEPROM reader goes, I don't know if such a device exists. I'm ignorant as far as that goes, so the product you were looking at may be just fine. I'd ask around about that.

Thanx...got it better in my head now....
Since it is only £8 I have bought the eeprom reader....when it arrives I shall let you know if it works...
Another avenue of approach has occured to me....unlikely but it MAY be possible to recover the lost data on the xbox hard drive using data recovery software , (which I already have)
The data is probably lost, but if all else fails it might be worthwhile trying.

I don't believe this....Just taken out the dvd drive to see where the eeprom reader goes and found an Aladdin chip already there.... Embarassed
Checked with the owner and he bought it on ebay and didn't know it was chipped either

Point is, I have learnt a lot so it was perhaps worth all the aggro

I think you'll have a hard time finding software which can read an Xbox partition table. If any exists.

Sounds like you got it figured out though.
