Hi all,

Told a friend to buy a $15 dollar xbox whose dvd drive could read any disks.

I tried wetting a Q-tip with denatured alcohol and wiping the inside of the drive and the exposed laser. Then wiped around the laser and the tray itself. Won't say my job was super thorough and not sure if it's ok to have the wetted Q-tip make contact with the laser itself.

I used the tut on here and a video on youtube for help:

http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-75.html

Is there any other advice people can offer? Should I try cleaning with a Q-tip again? Did it matter if I used denatured alcohol (ethanol + methanol) instead of isopropyl alcohol?

I don't need to buy another drive, I have all my games on the HDD anyways and two spare phillips drives to swap in anyways.

Just wanted to see if I could fix the drive for my friend for fun

^^ the cleaner/solvent should be fine as it'll completely evaporate in a short time...provided you was careful and didn't piss the tip wet through and dowse the assembly..?
..
look into a "POT" calibration for the lens if all else is a failure? (laser tweak)
use "POT" on site search and you'll get a few hits!
....
my outside searches lead me soley to 360 drives regardless of terms used Mad
...
good luck! Wink
[edit]...
normally, use ISOPROPANOL BUTYL (isopropyl) and FFS, don't go around using a solvent in advance then asking if it's okay..Rolling Eyes
what if you corroded something/left a residue/film on the lens?
you got lucky!
ask first if you're unsure in ANY way! Cool

Always stick to isopropynol. Its made using distilled water, ethanol isnt which usualy means mineral impurities. The best way to go is buy 99% isopropynal then boil water and pour it through a coffee filter, let it cool then cut the iso to 50% with it and use that.

And do yourself a favour if the philip you have are thinner/indented at the back use it. Those drives are superior to sammy drives. The AK-47 XBOX DVD-ROMs. I always tear the other drives out of my XBOXs and replace them with V2 philips drives. Hell I got a thread on here showing what an absolute dumbass did to his Philips, and within minutes I had it reading games that were beat to shit.

Oh I agree SPPV.

Can't stand it when people say Samsung drives were the best. Like this guy:

http://home.comcast.net/~admiral_powerslave/dvddrives.html

"My one phillips drive broke. That must mean all phillips drives are bad!"

Nice logic buddy...

Phillips ones CLEARLY were the best. I have my xbox from 2004 and my cousin's. Both have phiilips drives and are still kickin'

I didn't want to give my buddy his xbox with one of my phillips drives. I'd rather just learn how to fix his for fun. I'll look into the Isopropyl alcohol.

A man after my own heart lol. f#&@ THE WORLD PHILIPS FOR PRESIDENT lol They make some of the most hardcore shit Ive ever seen. Wicked drives, wicked headphones, wicked MP3 players. All take a beating like a red necks wife and keep on going.

LMAO off at the link, what a dumbass. Let me explain why a PC drive doesnt work. Lick my nuts buddy, PC drives work on a softmod XBOX fine. And he doesnt even get the rev right. There was 2 Thompsons and 2 Philips drives. Gotta love guys who piece together net BS and call it fact with 0 knowledge of the subject
