Hi everybody,

i am for the first time attempting to soft mod the original Xbox but i am encountering some problems.

Ok, so first of all, this is the material i have:

- PAL Xbox 1 with Dashboard version 1.00.5960.01
- USB to Xbox cable (with female USB port)
- Sandisc Cruzer 16GB USB stick (empty, bought it just to do the softmod)
- PAL Splinter Cell 1 game
- SID v5.10 Final files
- Xbox Action Replay drivers (downloaded from here)
- usbview.exe program

- i don't have an xbox memory card or the actual action replay device

Ok, so the SID pdf manual wasn't very clear on how to get the whole thing working with a USB stick, since it jumped from checking the dashboard version to copying the gamesaves to the Xbox. Anyway, reading around other guides and tutorials on the internet, i got it how to do this with a USB stick as well.

I know i'm supposed to plug the USB stick in the Xbox and go to Memory in the Dashboard where i'm supposed to get a message saying that the memory card wasn't working properly and has been erased, which is all good since this in required in order to format the USB stick.
HOWEVER, i instead get this message: "The memory unit you inserted isn't functioning; it may be damaged", therefore the Xbox is NOT formatting the USB stick. How can i solve this problem? And by the way, the USB stick is empty, what do we actually intend here for formatting? Just erasing everything on it or installing some sort of system files so that the Xbox can work with it?

Anyway i thought i'd try to continue without having the USB stick formatted to see what happens. I got it that i have to download and install the Xbox Action Replay files and then modify the xbreader.inf with notepad to add a line with the Vendor and Product ID numbers, done that. When i then go to update driver for my USB stick from Device Manager, i select the modified xbreader.inf file but i get this message "The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems". I'm running Vista x64. I tried looking for the same Xbox Action Replay drivers but for Vista x64, but i couldn't find them, maybe they don't exist.

So, can anybody help me proceeding into softmodding my old Xbox? This is something that i always wanted to do and i finally decided to do it after finding this amazing site, but now i need your help guys...

Thanks in advance!

I couldn't get the action replay device itself working on Windows 7. No amount of drivers or XP compatibility mode tricks worked.

ended up using a modded xbox to load Sid 5.1 onto the memory card using Aid 4.52. It was a p.i.t.a.

I've just done about 4-5 hours of searches, and well, i didn't find a solution yet but just to answer myself, the USB needs to be formatted by the Xbox because it HAS TO BE in the FATX file system format.

I've been looking to see if there is any program that formats a device to FATX in Windows, but apparently the only existing program that does this is Linux based, as far as i understood.

Just by googling the message that the Xbox gives me when it checks the USB stick, "The memory unit you inserted isn't functioning; it may be damaged", i've found that people have been having this problem since at least 2004, and i'm impressed by the fact that the SID manual/tutorial doesn't menition this at all, and assumes that 100% of the times a USB stick is plugged in the Xbox this will be formatted.

Also, somebody as said that a USB stick has to be of less than 4GB to work with the Xbox, if this is true then i'm screwed, since my just-bought-for-this stick is 16GB.

As far as the other problem goes, selecting the modified xbreader.inf file as the new driver for the USB stick, i suppose i can find someone with an XP or Vista 32bit computer and do it from there. But first i have to get my USB stick to be in FATX format.

Come on guys, i'm sure somebody knows something that can help me.
I don't wanna give up on this. Sad

Thanks

It is true that fatx cant read over 4GB, even then it is not a given that all usb sticks will work.

Best bet is to get a smaller usb stick and try a different brand.

Thanks for confirming that. At least now i know i have to start looking for a smaller size USB stick. Also, i found this list of devices that do/don't work. Will see if i can get one of these for cheap from internet. Thanks!! Smile
