Hey gang, thanks for all the help with Softmodding my console, I haven't done it yet but I just need to get the SID files when I get paid and a memory stick and I'm away.
I had a question:
Will my 160Gb IDE Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600 HDD work with the xbox?
I had a look in the Harddrive database and there are a few WD models etc but not the exact one that I have
Also I have no idea how to mod my xbox to allow a new hdd, I am going to do the Softmod using Mech Assault next week, what else do I need to do? I am comfortable with taking the xbox apart but would not be willing to attempt any soldering, so I guess if its not a simple case of open xbox, take out old hdd, plug new one in and then bobs your uncle I'm unsure how confident i will be.
Also, can I move the data thats on my hdd currently to the new one? I assume I could do that using xplorer360 and an IDE-USB connector (which I have) ??
Thanks

It is actually very easy to swap out a hard drive. Your drive should work, but the only way to find out is to try it out. Just use chimp and you'll be all set to go. Here is the tut for chimp:http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-260.html _________________

Also since you are going the softmod route, you will need to check on the hard drive and see if it is lockable or not. If it is not lockable you will not be able to use it unless you have a mod chip installed. _________________ Hotswap Tutorial|FTP Tutorial|HyperX Flashing Tutorial

Hi guys, thanks for the tips. So I have a couple questions after reading the tutorial and your msgs:
-How do I know if my HDD can be locked or not?
-The guide mentions xbox versions 1.0-1-5 and then 1.6, how do I know which mine is?
-Should I mod my HD before or after I softmod the xbox?
-Can I install Chimp as a standalone program or does it go in after I softmod my xbox?
-I don't understand point 12 in the guide about EEprom backups being in tmp folders, how do I do that??
Cheers guys

The drive should work just fine and lock no probs.
You will need to softmod the old HDD then install chimp as an app and use it to install the larger hdd.
We do have guides for the chimp app.
The soft mod will work for any ver of xbox and you will know for sure if its a 1.6 when you go to run chimp.

Anyway like I said in the other thread, thanks for all the help and patience so far !

EEPROM is like the key to your hdd and without it its real hard to fix any errors you might get, when you run the softmod there is an option to move the eeprom to any drive you want so move it to root E or F and then FTP the eeprom to a pc for safe keeping.

Ok see that sentence right there? That made me go all crossed eyed, this is where I show my immense thickness lol, I wouldn't know how to do any of what you just said, and I'm sure it makes me sound like a 'tard lol, sorry. I know there is mention of the eeprom in the tutorial video I think you made for running the softmod program, but I didn't quite understand the whole eeprom/backup part. I only have 1 drive so how can I back it up to another drive, THEN ftp it to my pc? Thanks

Ok your xbox will have a C and a E partition and when you softmod you can look at them with the file manager, use the softmods eeprom backup option to back up the eeprom and then use it to move the eeprom to your root E partition aka drive.

Ok so this is all done with the original drive still in the machine right? So the harddrive becomes partitioned after I do the Softmod? And then I make a backup and move it to the e partition? Is that all I have to do? Or is it worth ftp-ing it to my pc? Thanks

The xbox allready has the 2 partitions but yes all you got to do is move the eeprom to the E partition and then ftp it to your PC or move it to a mem card/ thumb drive and put it on your PC.
If you dont back it up to the PC and the HDD was to fail you have to build an eeprom reader to get that eeprom back and it is a pain.
If you have the eeprom on your PC and the xbox hdd fails you can build a new hdd with out all the pain by using the eeprom you backed up to your pc.

Aaah ok that makes it simple, I can just move it to my pc using the usb stick I will get, cool. So eeprom is just a fancy name for the backup incase the fit hits the shan, right? Cool I get that now, thanks. So what do I do with the old hdd, just ditch it? I suppose I could hang onto it if all goes to hell.

You got it now and yes, the old hdd is good to keep as a back up for the just in case reasons.

You can install it with the AID disk, ftp it to the xbox, or use the mem card / flash drive option.
