I have a faulty hardrive on a 2002 build Xbox which sometimes works with serious clicking sounds. When not working I get the 07 fault. It will fire up only every 3rd day or so if I am lucky.
I have done the SID5 mod. I done the eeprom backup and MS backup, then done the VC + eeprom install and this worked.
I want the eeprom backup so I can build a new harddrive but I can't find it.
Where does it live and what is it called?
When I find it, can I copy to my controller memory card and how do I do this? I have another softmoded Xbox on my network that I can then plug the memory card in and transfer to my PC.
Am I on the right track to fix my problem?
Please help.

You will need to be able to ftp to get the eeprom off the xbox. Since you softmodded the xbox already you have a eeprom backup. It will be in some weird folder though. It should be in E:\UDATA, but its in an odd subfolder thats pretty deep inside of the UDATA folder. The folder that contains the eeprom is like 000000 if I remember correct. Just keep searching your E:\ partition until you find a file named eeprom (or eeprom.bin). Then ftp that file to your computer and then you can make a new hdd.

If you can FTP in mate, rather than go searching through, most FTP programs have a search/find facility. Just runn a search for eeprom and it'll come up. That will save you some time.

Thanks for the replies.
I now know how to find my eeprom file, but I now get the 07 fault all the time. All connections are good so my guess is that the HD is dead.
I may have to build an eeprom reader.
If there is any other way, please let me know.

Thanks again

You can try the hot swap and see if it will still work for you, here is the guide for that: http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-161.html

You'll have to keep trying to get it to boot up until it does. Once it does then you need to hurry and get the eeprom off of it.

I have built an eeprom reader and have now got an eeprom.bin file which I retrieved using the reader and Ponyprog software.
I have dowloaded xboxhdm and will lookup tuturials to learn what to do with it. (Any tips would be nice.)
If I can't work it out I will post another question.

Thanks again

Thanks for steering me in the right direction.
I have now replaced the dead hdd with a new 160 gig hdd. All went well and this xbox works like new.
I can now softmod it and start filling it with lots of goodies. Very Happy

Cheers
