Okay, I was asked recently to mod a friends xbox in addition to the xbox's of his sister and a friend of his. His xbox was no problem, nor was his sisters, the problem came when I attempted to mod his friend's xbox, and it went through and all that jazz, except that when you try and boot it it gives that warning about "Your xbox needs to be serviced" or whatever. When I looked into it a bit more, I looked at the bottom, and where it normally says Xbox video game system it says xbox debug kit. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

It sounds like you somehow put a debug bios onto the xbox.

Welcome to the XBOX-HQ, we hope you enjoy this and all the other HQ sites we have to offer. Very Happy

Since Darth pointed out the obvious and did not tell you how to fix it i guess i will.

Download AID 4.20 and read the guide in it on how to add the add ons, once done pop it in and use the bios flash tool to re-flash a working bios and you should be fine man. Wink

You can get aid 4.20 here: http://www.aidtracker.com/ with any bit client.

That's the thing though, I think it's actually the other way around, it says Xbox Debug kit on the underside of the case, but it functions exactly like a standard xbox. Except for the issue with trying to mod it. I'll try your thing though and see if it helps any.

Also, it might be relevant to mention that I haven't touched the bios, this was a softmod operation. Whatever state this bios is in is exactly how it came to me, and how it came to the owner.

Oh wow thats a new one, i was under the impression it was a chipped box.

My post is no good if the xbox is not chipped.

The Xbox Debug Kit is normally given to publications for the purpose of previewing and reviewing preproduction copies of games, debugging kits are essentially slightly modified versions of finished consoles.

What error pops up when you boot it, i need the number in the top corner?

Okay, when I install the softmod, and then try to boot it it comes up to a screen as I try to boot it that says: "Your xbox requires service. Please call xbox customer support" Then it repeats in a bunch of other languages. No error number or code or anything.

And to make matters worse it won't let me remove the softmod so that it can boot to the ms dash. And then my Run Linux save went all buggy and I can't even access the mod menu. I'm so lost, and it seems at least a little screwed.

UPDATE: Okay, I got it back to a normal type status. So, the only problem is how to mod it. Any advice?

If a standard soft mod wont take I'm not sure what to tell you since we don't see many (if any) of the debug xbox's here. Confused

if it is a true debug/dev system, then it wouldnt need to be modded to run unsigned code. also if your just wanting to replace the bios, just do a tsop mod. and change the dash.

Any way of telling if it's a "true" debug sys?

He could also check by trying to boot up AID. If it boots AID without having a softmod on it then it is a debug xbox.

Or it already has a chip in it that has a debug bios. Did your friend buy this xbox new?

I don't know anything about this box except the following.

A friend brought it over to be modded on behalf of another friend.
It wouldn't take a softmod that has worked on dozens of other xboxes.
It functions and looks exactly like any other xbox except for the following stuff on the under side of the xbox.
- In the upper right corner where it says: Xbox video Game System on most, it says: Xbox Debug Kit
- It has no do not open warnings.
- In the middle where they don't typically have a sticker, but it has a spot where a sticker would go, this one has a white sticker with the following info:

Green Units

Configuration: C

Mfg date: 8/31/01

083101152239010

In almost that exact format. I'm going to try to run AID, and see what kind of response I get. I'll let you all know the results.
