I couldn't find a better thread to post this is, so here it goes. I am trying to hotswap. I have a computer and my xbox's case is off. In order to hotswap do I HAVE to unscrew the dvdrom? Also, how hard do I have to pull on the power supply to get it to come out( I am talking about the red, yellow, and two black cords plugged into the hard drive internally. I can't get it with my fingers, so I am thinking i need to use pliers or something. Also, how DO i unplug the IDE cord from my xbox's hard drive? It seems like its soldered on.
I just didn't want to test the water, without knowing the consequences first.

Pictures would be nice, Thanks,

-sn

(if this is in the wrong thread, I'm sorry, move at your discretion)

Ok, first: Its better to unscrew the DVD Rom drive, yes.
Second: You'll have to use a little force to get the power out. Also, try wiggling it from side to side as you pull. Just hold it by the sides and you won't damage it (do not pull cables). Use pliers, or just remove HDD.
Third: The IDE cord in the HDD is a plastic connector. You just pull it out. Won't require a lot of force.

Hope that helps.

is it ABSOLUTELY necessary that I unscrew my dvdrom, because I managed to get the outside screws off without a torx, but it looks like i will have to use a torx if I want to get the dvdrom out. Also, is the IDE connector the black plastic piece that it looks like the IDE cord is "flowing" into?

If you can remove the IDE cable from the DVD drive without removing it, then by all means leave it in place.

Yes, thats the IDE connector, exactly as you described. Its the black bit where the cable comes into.

sorry for another dumb question, but how do I remove the IDE cable? What I mean is that the black piece extends about 1 cm from the edge of the case, so I can't grip around it. I'm assuming I don't just pull on the IDE cable.

Thanks again, and sorry for the hassle

Hold as close to the black plastic as possible, however, you can pull gently on the cable this time. Try to pull one side out first, then the other. It shouldn't require a lot of force.

Just make sure you hold as close as you can to the black plastic connector.

I guess I'm really dumb. I just tried doing what you suggested. I firmly held onto the cord at the base of the black connector and slowly pulled on the left side of the cord. It barely budged! It was a firm grip/tug, and by firm I mean if i had pulled any harder I fear it would have ripped the cord. Just to make all things clear, I am pulling OUT the black connector entirely, and not just the cord, correct? And how hard is "gentle"? Maybe we have two different definitions.

EDIT!!!:Success at last!!! Thank you for all your help!

Thanks again, sorry again

Sorry, but I have ONE last quick question. When I am told to "take the power cable off the dvd-rom." does that mean pull out the clear plastic connector that holds the yellow cables? I don't know what the power cable is.

Thanks
