I'm trying to get everything taken care of before my x-chip arrives. I've been reading forums and instructions on how to install the chip and HD but I'm still confused (a newb) on the matter. First off, here's my X-box info:

MFG DATE: 2004-06-10
S/N: 230220542406
PRODUCT ID: 521230220542406

I think this is a 1.6 box but i'm not sure. I need help picking out a replacement HD and working out all the details. I found this comparison chart:

http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/

However, I worry that this may not be valid for 1.6, since I've heard there alot of issues with the new x-boxes. Can anyone confirm? I'm looking for as large of HD (200 - 250+) as possible, within reason (not going to pay 200 bucks for an extra 20gigs, ya know).

So, if anyone can clear these things up for me, or point me in the right direction I'd be greatly appreciative. My biggest problems is not knowing if the information i'm reading is valid for 1.6 and installing the HD seems complicated. Do you install the HD after you install the mod chip? How do you get it to FTP with the PC, etc. etc. Thanks to all! Hopefully I'll be able to return the favor someday, after I get out of this stupid newb stage.

To clarify.... When it comes to installing a new HD, all the guides I've read say that i need the "EvolutionX 1.8.2594 or higher dashboard." Does the x-chip have this? Can it use this if I go and get it somewhere else? Or, does it have it's own program different than this?[/i]

Hey bud, Kudos to you for taking the correct steps prior to installing your chip. It always gives me the warm and fuzzies when I see new modders getting organized! But, if you get stuck don't guess what to do...please post or contact me directly a realmccloy@xbox-hq.com

If you need one on one help, I can do MSN instant messenger, ICQ or if you are in the states I can supply you with a phone number to give trouble shooting support.

I am not too familar with the XChip, but I have helped others flash the chip. You need to find some install guides for your particular chip and it is very very important that you determine your Xbox version.

Open it up and look at the chip. If you have a Xcalibur it's a 1.6

If you have a Focus it's a 1.4 or 1.5...frankly, I haven't ran into any 1.5's.

If you have a 1.6 you will most likely have to rebuild the LPC..that's the bottom side of the area where you soldered your chip into.

I won't get into this in great depths because we dont' know your version for sure yet.

I would recommend newer Evolution X dashboard build 3935.

You do not put this on your chip. You put this on your HD and your chip boots to it.

What you do need to do is flash your modchip with a bios. Your modchip will come with a legal bios called Cromwell. You need to flash a hacked bios on it otherwise you will not be able to do much of anything.

Every chip has different flash procedures. You will have a cable that goes from your PC to the chip most likely and flash it that way. If you have a 1.6 you MUST use the EvoX M8 bios. If you have another version then I suggest the Xecuter2 4983.67 bios.

With the manufacture date of your machine, it's most likely a 1.6 but you never know. The best way is to look at the chip.

As far as HD's, just make sure you get a lockable one. Find the model number of your HD and use this link to search the database of lockable drives. This database was filled up with people who have successfully used the HD on their machine and locked it.

Use the link that you furnished, it's the same I use for 1.6's.

Keep note, that there is a resistor that may blow when you are taking your machine apart. There is nothing you can do to prevent this. So if you boot your xbox and nothing happens...and by nothing I mean it's like it isn't even plugged in...don't panic. It's a very easy fix.

As far as HD size, I furnished a M8 bios here in our VIP download section that will support 250GB so no worries there. DJB also made a kick ass bios CD for download.

To gain access to our VIP section, just become a VIP member by making the required donation.

We also have autoinstallers that will install your dash and all your apps. It is kick ass and makes your install so much easier...it honestly takes about five minutes to use!! Saves you hours and hours.

Anyway, good luck to you and welcome to the community.

Let me know if I can be of any other assistance.

Thanks for all the info. I haven't taken the box apart yet, but will likely do so within the next day or two. It's good to know there's someone out there who I can get some help from. Just a double check, the X-chip can be flashed with any BIOS, just as any other modchip can? I know the package I've ordered comes with a USB programmer and a 'Linker Wire' as well as the Cromwell bios you mentioned and a software pack that includes 'X-control_install.exe' and what looks like driver files for the USB. Well, that's it for now... until I open up the box. Thanks again.

Well, theoretically it can be flashed with any bios, but that doesn't mean your xbox version will handle that bios.

For instance, the 1.6 machines need the M8 bios.

Don't worry bud, we're here for you when you need it. Like I said, I can give you live support via MSN, ICQ, or even phone.

later bud

took the xbox apart, it's a 1.6. Trying to figure out what the next steps are, should I go ahead and solder or do i need to flash the chip first? I'll look around online for a guide, if anyone can/wants to help me out, send a message to my MSN at Ethos_1@hotmail.com. Thanks all. I'll be returning the favor someday.

Just another side note: I'm replacing the HD with a 250 GB Maxtor (checked the chart to make sure it's lockable). Should I just get the chip going with the original X-box HD then switch 'em out? Will my game saves be transfered over?

I am not sure if the X chip is flashed pre or post install. I am leaning toward post install. Did it come with a cable or a programmer? I don't believe you flash via the DVD Rom Drive, so it must've come with a USB cable or something to flash with.

Here is the route I go, but I install Xenium's....dunno if this will be okay for you or not.

Dismantle machine.
Insert Pinheader and tape in.
Solder Pinheader on bottomside of mobo
If it's a 1.6 I then rebuild the LPC.
Reassemble and pray for no fragging.
Flash chip with original HD in.
After flash, shut down, remove stock HD and install new HD
Format, Prepare, and install apps and dash's on new HD.
Lock HD.

That's pretty much it.

perfect. That's exactly the method i'm going on. Oh, and it came with a USB programmer. Probably going to be trying my soldering out tomorrow night (10-10-04). I'm sure I'll have more questions when I get started, thanks again.
