just bought an old xbox off of another message board.
the seller claimed he tested it before sending it out and had no problems.
it does not appear to be modded - the case has all stickers intact.
i don't think he would softmod it because it came with xbox live with about 9 months left
the problem is when i turn it on, it gives me the service screen with 21 in the corner and the light flashes red and green.
also, i do not get any link light for the ethernet when connected to my router
worth trying to repair or should i put it on ebay as broken?

error 21 is one of the most common error messages people get after softmodding (from what ive seen), it is fixable, also pretty easy from what i read.
google it, ull find a quick answer, ull probly need help though, since your new to softmodding.

i'm shure it could be fixed Error 21 means it cant find the dash....
so i would say if you put a new copy of Ms Dash (5960) it will work fine.....
But you will need to hotswap it and that can be tricky BUT not that hard... _________________

or contact the person you got it from and see if they have the eeprom....and then use that to make a xboxhd disc so you dont have to hotswap... _________________

That would be easyer
or ask if he did softmod it what game he used,
then just pop that game in and remod it... _________________

well, the guy i bought it from is going to be no help. he claimed no modding at all...and now he's not answering email anymore
the only other thing i need to ask is, i posted this at xbox-scene and someone said that my ethernet NIC was the problem... i guess the hotswap is a hell of a lot easier to try and fix than trying to solder in a new nic

and if you believe this then ur a bigger mug than he is. Face it, he's had a go at modding it and failed miserably.
Can you still boot a game disc?

have a go at hotswapping..
im a noob to xbox scene..and didnt want to open up it up.. but gave a shot
was easy enough...worked even without your eeprom...
simple burn the linux iso with ms dash embedded
and do hotswap..

no, it won't boot a disc
i'll try the hot swap tonights and post results in the morning, thanks for all the help
update: tried it...but messed it up. i didn't read the bold uppercase print and ended up powering off the xbox after removing the drive.
once it was connected to my computer, i couldn't view the drive in fatxexplorer or xplorer360 though...even though i tried it as all the drive configurations (primary master, slave etc...doing that pausing boot sequence took some time and it would recognize it, i just could never explore the drive)
so, do you think i might have a busted hard drive? how could i even go about replacing that if i don't have my eeprom?
looks like this xbox is getting closer to being on ebay every second

it says in the tutorial that you have to open up the program and it will show the partitions of the drive, then you have to copy over msdash into one of the partitions
i'll try again

Well thats mainly because the drive wasnt completely unlocked make sure you remove the dvd drive and look for the error that corrisponds with the dvd drive missing. If you bought this through paypal id say get your money back through them by submitting a complaint cuz there is no reason for some1 to say something and then do another thing, _________________
