Assuming you have a standard, unmodded Xbox, you'll need to install a modchip.
Once the modchip installation is complete (including flashing it with an "aftermarket" BIOS), you'll need to install an "aftermarket" dashboard (that supports FTP, like EvoX). You can use an autoinstaller disc to do this.
When this is done, you can use a crossover ethernet cable to connect your Xbox and your PC. NOTE: I've never been able to get it to work this way. I use a router and plug both my computer and Xbox into it. An FTP program such as FlashFXP can be used to transfer files back and forth between the PC and Xbox.
