alright my xbox is softmodded and i set up a 80 gig with xbox hard drive maker and it couldnt lock it. from other sites i found it could be locked with config magic. if i have config magic on my xbox can i unlock the stock hdd put the new one in then lock that one with config magic or will it not even load the hdd?

NO dont unlock ur stock hdd. if u have urs softmodded then it will be easy. get your eeprom with the one hdd u have locked to ur xbox then transfer it to u computer along with ALL the other files. then what u need to do is get a copy of hdm1.9 and put the files in the respected spots then use make iso win or something like that and then burn the iso to cd or dvd. now turn ur computer off and put in the new hdd into ur computer and remove ur current hdd and then start it up and put in the disc u burned. and then follow the hdm hotswap tut from there.

dude i just wrote that i used hard drive maker and it couldnt lock the hard drive
