I have seen some postings mentioning you can do this, but how? and does it actually make the fan faster?

Unplug power cord.
Take out HDD + DVD drive.
Unclip the stock fan using a screwdriver...(You know where the clips are...)
Take a look at the fan’s plug. Use a needle to pinch out the “black” wire.
Ground the “black” wire under a screw on the motherboard as shown.
Leave the “red” wire the way it is though. (You see the “red” wire’s always plugged in.)
MAKE SURE THE “BLACK” WIRE’S TIP IS TOUCHING THE “SILVER” PART UNDER THE SCREW! FAILURE TO DO SO WILL MAKE YOUR XBOX “RESTART” FREQUENTLY DURING THE NEXT BOOTUP!
