i've got a v1.0 Xbox, with the GPU fan (millennium electronics 40mm). problem is its so noisey i can hear it all thru my house!!

can i replace the heatsink from a newer version an get rid of the fan?

can i run it without the fan... or is that a terminal idea?

or, if no to both, any ideas for a decent replacement?

cheers guys

you could put another heatsink on there and remove the fan. make sure you use some good thermal compound, and you shouldn't have any problems.

Yep, just the clip and thermal paste. It will take some force, but don't worry, because the gpu chip itself is solidly attached, I tried to pry it off with a small screwdrive, and it would move. Just make sure you don't flex the motherboard too much when applying force.
