I'm sure this has been addressed before, but would it be possible to buy a new harddrive (cause as far as I understand, when you get a new harddrive, you have to redo everything) and just attach it to my computer, then do all the software work directly to the new harddrive, sorta doing a soft mod with it connected to your computer directly, then after everything had been bios'd and all that jazz, just plugging it back into the xbox... would that or something like that work? Just an idea... maybe my idea will lead to someone making a serious breakthrough... or maybe it's someone else's idea and already been used...

Hey dude u can infact already download device drivers which allow windows to recognise the xbox file format and allows you to plug in a HD into the PC and read the contents. This is a popular way of people using the softmodding hacks like the PBL. 1 thing to remember is to use a XBOX HD formatter to format the xbox first and also if you need to access it again after bemember to boot in the xbox and pull power out of HD after playing music for a few secs so the HD is unlocked. _________________ Xbox Master And Commander

Hail oh lazy one!!! hehehe lol
Ok heres your answer:
Once you have modded your xbox with a modchip (of any kind) and can play backup games from your xbox then it would be a waste of time to install the EVOX DASHBOARD, emulaotrs and all the apps etc to your RETAIL 6-8gb xbox HDD. The retail XBOX HDD is way too small.. You would only fit a couple of sets of ROMS (say SNES, N64) on it or say 2 x full sized xbox games.. I would leave it alone so you know that you always have the old RETAIL HDD if anything goes wrong after upgrading to a LARGER HDD too
Move on if your xbox is modchipped and working perfectly with the retail HDD installed:
This is just a example.. You can buy a bigger HDD if you choose it doesnt matter.. We have members here running 250gb HDD's in their xboxes.. Check out some peoples signatures..
Lets go:
1. Download a copy of the XBOX HQ AUTO INSTALLER from here:
http://xbox-hq.com/html/downloadsvip.html
2. Burn this .iso file to DVD-R/CDRW using NERO or DVDDecrypter..
Doesnt matter what program you use as long as it supports .ISO files.
3. Now open your xobx and remove the RETAIL HDD
4. Take not of the JUMPER SETTINGS on your retails XBOX HDD.
They should normally be on CS - Cable Select but just write down or remember what it is set to.
5. Check that your new HDD 120gb (example) has the same JUMPER SETTINGS as the OLDER RETAIL HDD..
6. Grab your new 120gb HDD (example) and install it in your xbox (easy)
7. Now put your xbox back together and boot the XBOXHQ AUTOINSTALLER.
8. with the AUTOINSTALLER in your XBOX DVDROM drive it will now boot to the DVDROM AUTOINSTLALER menu.
9. You now choose format/parition new xbox HDD
10. You then choose to install whatever you want..
11. I would just choose INSTALL EVOX AND ALL APPS to E:\ or F:\
12. Once its finished you now need to LOCK YOUR NEW HDD.
13. Find CONFIG MAGIC. It should be in your XBOX EVOX MAIN MENU which was just copied onto your NEW xbox HDD..
RESET YOUR XBOX (turn off and on) with NO DVD in the XBOX DVDROM DRIVE.. (remove the xboxhq autoinstaller)
14. Your xbox will now boot with the modded EVOX DASHBOARD that the auto installer just copied to your new 120gb HDD (example)..
15. Find CONFIG MAGIC and boot it
16. Choose lock hdd from the menu and thats it..
If you cant find CONFIG MAGIC on your XBOX then it is also in the DOWNLOADS VIP section.. Download it from there and burn it to CDRW and lock it that way.
Thats it buddy..
hope that helps.. Btw.. im typing this off the top of my head. So its not perfect but nearly GOD DAM right!
This may be redundant, and I might be too thick to understand.. but if I were to buy a new HDD, would I still need the mod chip to mod my xbox, or when I get the new HD can I just start following those directions?

YOU NEED A MODCHIP TO USE THOSE DIRECTIONS..
You cant upgrade your xbox hdd without a MODCHIP or FLASHING YOR XBOX MOTHERBOARD BIOS (which i do not and will never recommend to anyone)..
