It is my understanding that in the tutorials I read, that the max amount of HDD storage the oem XBOx bios will see is 137GB. Hence, the max HDD would be a 120GB IDE HDD. However, I have seen others reporting HDD sizes with softmod only: 200GB, 250GB, 300GB, and 400GB. I even saw a website selling legal softmod of XBOX(s) with 250GB HDD(s).

What is the max size that you can upgrade to without a modchip?

i don't think there is such a thing as a legally softmodded Xbox. but as for Xbox capacity, the older bios' only supported up to 137 gigs but any newer bios will support nearly any size regardless of how it was modded
