Hi,
After weeks of reading posts and posting questions I have finally bitten the bullet and softmodded my new xbox v1.6x with success !!
Thanks to all who helped with this by answering my nOObie Q's.
Just for the record this is how I did it.......
Controller to PC usb cable, Action replay software (I updated AR driver database to accept my memory card from a tutorial on Gadget Junkies)infinity 8mb flash card, SID 3.0 and AID 2.11 FINAL ,original UK splinter cell game and lots of help from you guys !!
I thought I had messed up after installing AID 2.11 and rebooting with out the AID disc - I got error 21.(I forgot to re-install a dash before rebooting) I just put in the AID disc and installed the evox dash - with nice xbox.hq logo.
I backed up my dash to E:/ BEFORE installing the 'softmod' from SID as you guys kept telling me this was very important !!! - so now hopefully if I boot with tray open I should be able to recover my m$ dash.
Q's - should i back up the eeprom files ? if so how.
Can I install any dash from AID ? Will it just over write the evox dash with the one selected from the menu ?
Anyway must go i've some new games to play !!!!

Congrats!! Now that wasn't so bad was it??? You'll find "backup" by going to the system settings in evox. I would ftp the back-up files to your pc. You know, in case you feel like deleting your e: partition. As far as the dashes go, when I tried to install them, the dashes installed to a seperate directory. So, I had two evox directories. The latest version and the one before. If you have the drive space, install to your hearts content and start "testing" _________________ Xenium Ice 2.3.1 OS

If you have the evox dashboard installed you should see a backup option in the menu somewhere.. Select this option and in a few seconds it will backup your eeproms and hdkey info to your XBOX C:\ partition.
You can then ftp into your xbox from your pc and get the backup folder:
c:\backup\
You always want to keep a backup of your eeprom..

No, Since you are using a softmod you must only install a dashboard from the SOFTMOD section of the AID..
The normal Install Dashboards section is for modchips only.
