I used Splinter Cell to install the Softmod and followed the instructions, step by step, in a previous thread to try and sort out the MS Dash error 21 problem. The softmod works great, evoX dash works great. But, when I click on MS Dashboard within EvoX menu, I get error 21.
Looking at the files on the C drive, there is a msdash.xbe and a xboxdash.xbe. Running the msdash.xbe gives me the error 21 while running the xboxdash.xbe gives me nothing.
My first question is, does it really matter ? Do I really need to run MS dashboard. If not then fine. I will live with it.
But, what if the Xbox was powered off and it lost the date/time, would I have to use the MS dashboard to enter it.
I have seen one answer to the error 21 and that was to lock the HDD. I see the option to do that in the Evox menu but am too scared to say 'Yes' to the next question as I don't want to completley mess it up.
Also read another possible soluion which was to install the Nkpatcher + MS or install the PBL + MS. I have not done either of these as not sure which one I need to do, if any to sort this problem out.
Any help, much appreciated.
Some info:
Xbox is v1.1 (gb)
Used splinter cell and SID to install softmod.
Used AID (with patch) to install Evox dash.

You don't really need MS dash.In case you want it,you have to put it back after the successfull softmod and then back-up your C:\drive again + re-softmod it again. After you'll have to apply MS dash patch and re-boot it.

It sounds like the MS dashboard orginally on the xbox was not the 5960 version. You can restore the MS dash from you softmod menu, but only if you made a back up first. You can install a program like xboxwatch if your xbox is connected to a LAN, this will let you fix the date and time.
If you decide to restore the xbox back to original just use a newer game with xbox live and choose to sign in. You don't need a connection but this will put the newer MS dash on your xbox. Then reinstall your softmod and the patch should work.
Another option would be to make a folder and put it in your Apps folder with the xboxdash.xbe in it. This is easy and will give you your ms dash. _________________ Xbox v1.3

One last thing, if you decide to restore the xbox and then run a newer game. You will have to make a new msbackup.

Hummm...question?
Is the back-up of a newer game could also update the MS dash?
In case it is...that means some of my friends will call me sooner or later with
an error 21 because no MS back-up or patch were applied (and their softmod has gone).
Should i warn them to never try to go on Live just for it?

It worked, fantastic. Thanks Cantgetright, for your advice.
So, here is what I had to do:
1. Insert a new game with Xbox Live anabled (I used Spliner Cell 3) and choose xbox live which forced the install of live and updated MS dash.
2. Get to the SID menu using one of the expoits (Splinter Cell, MechAssault or 007)
3. Create MS backup
4. Delete all files fromC drive using file manager
5. Install the softmod
6. Install dashboard (EvoX)
7. Boot to the AID 2
8. Install MS dash
9. Re-install softmod
10. Patch
11. Backup mod
12. Install dashboard (EvoX)
It works great. Error 21 has gone.
Thanks.

Hmmm?,
RogT I tried your method on 2 xbox's. One was a v1.5 and it worked great! The other was the newest version I just got from ebgames, not sure what version it is, and it didn't work? It looked like the ms dash wanted to fire up and at the last second I got a 21 error? Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

When using AID2, if you select either "NKpatcher + MS Dash" or "PBL + MS Dash" from the softmod menu, this wipes C clean, and installs the softmod and MS dash from scratch.
When the softmod is installed properly you should get no errors at all.
Just a couple of notes though
* When installing the Softmod it will ask for a boot location, make sure you install a hacked dashboard there
* Make sure the hacked dashboard is installed before restarting, otherwise you will get an error.
Hope that helps...

Ok,
Thanks for the info, I will give it a try. I had AID2 but unfortunately one of my pc hd's fried and I'm in the process of downloading it again. I've just been using SID2. The newer xbox is my nephews and someone was messing around with it. Deleted the M$ backup and rebacked it up with the modded one? Also erased over 20 games. Oh well, I have the xboxhdm boot disk I made for him still. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Ok,
I found out my problem, I was trying to do this to the upgraded hd and it kept going to 21 error when I tried to launch the MS Dash? So, I went back to the stock hd, patched it and rebuilt the larger hd with xboxhdm v1.9.
Also, I used Rogt's tut without the AID 2 step, just used SID 2 & it worked great!
