Hi there.

First and foremost, let me get the necessary clarifications out of the way: I am coming to you guys as a complete neophyte to the modding craft -- an absolute technobimbo. With that out of the way, please listen to my tale of woe!

I recently bought a modded Xbox from a friend who was moving abroad; with what meagre abilities I have, I think I've gleaned that the console has a 2TB HDD but has no other internal modifications. Anyway, the console came to me with a number of (original) Xbox titles already pre-installed onto the HDD. Some work great, most do not. In that latter contingent, after being selected, games either crash back to the UnleashX dashboard or give a 'Dirty or Damaged Disc' message (particular to that game's files, of course).

From the hour I spent imploring Google for answers, I think the issue affecting these select games is that MS' latter stage piracy measures are kicking in and the game files on the HDD haven't been patched for these titles. I've also read that a simple remedy for these issues is to use 'DVD2Xbox's' File Manager and 'ACL Process' the problem games (if that makes sense). Herein lies the problem, however: upon pressing the White button and selecting the 'Process ACL' option, the console seems to freeze. No matter what game it is, the message 'Processing ACL for File or Directory, Please wait!' hits and the Xbox locks up.

I've been told that each 'process' should take a minute or two at max; I've waited over an hour and still nothing. Have I been mislead? Am I just being impatient and should give the programme longer? That said, it really does seem as if the Xbox locks up whenever I attempt the procedure. Of course, this is a problem born of another problem: am I doing the right thing in using DVD2Xbox? After all, what I'm ultimately trying to do is get the thirty or so unresponsive games on my HDD fully functional.

So, with nowhere to turn, I look to you -- the sagacious and magnanimous ubermensch of this community -- for some kind of direction and assistance. Thanks in advance!

Thirty games are a hell of a lot to not have working just for it to be due to not having been ACL (Access Control List) patched.

This is a simple guide to ACL process games already installed on the HDD which may need patching. I've not used this technique myself as I usually install everything from original disc:-

Steps to patch a game you've already backed up on the HDD

1) Use the HDD browser (B button).

2) Press the R trigger and select the drive that you copied the game to.

3) Select the folder that contains your games. (Example: F:\Games\)

4) Highlight the game folder you want to run the ACL on.

5) Press the L Trigger and select "Process ACL".

You can check what ACL patch files your version of DVD2Xbox actually includes by using the UnleashX file manager and going to, typically, E:\Apps\DVD2Xbox\acl. This folder contains all the ACL files but you'll see the IDs are all number/letter combos. So to identify the actual game it is used to patch you'll need to use the UnleashX main menu > System > Game Saves Manager and look at the ID shown in the main 'parent' save for each game. You could look instead at the E:\item.xml which lists all the installed games, apps etc and also shows the ID.

You might find that the games you have which don't work aren't amongst the ACL files you have and so that would be a simple explanation as to why it doesn't patch the game. BTW that doesn't mean there isn't a ACL patch required and available, just that it wasn't provided with your DVD2Xbox version.

So find a game on the HDD that doesn't work and you definitely have the correct ACL patch file. It must be a correct region patch for the game and console too ie. if the game is PAL the console must also be set to PAL before it is patched or the patch will not be applied.

Once applied, if the game supports NTSC/ED, and most PAL games do, it can then be swapped to NTSC and the patching will still work.

A good example of this is PAL Riddick: Return To Butcher Bay which refused to run on my NTSC region swapped PAL Xbox even though installed from the original (PAL) disc using DVD2Xbox + the PAL ACL patch file.. I swapped the Xbox back to PAL, reinstalled and it patched successfully and now it plays fine on the same console in NTSC mode at 480p.

If none of this helps then it might be useful to know:-

1). The Xbox version are you using

2). The Xbox region ie. NTSC or PAL and, if PAL, has it been region changed to NTSC.

3). A few examples of the games which are crashing.

4). Do you have the Enigmah region changer in E:\Apps or wherever your Apps or Applications folder is located?

Sorry to say that there is also another possibility and one you are not going to like: the games are irreparably corrupted.

If the games are on G:\ ie. the largest extended partition and the 2TB HDD was not partitioned using the correct cluster size settings for an extended partition on a HDD of this size then this is a very likely consequence.

Hi Arch, thanks for responding. At first, I thought you'd solved my problem in one: looking in the 'acl' folder in e://apps/dvd2xbox, I saw that there was no file for 'Conker: Live and Reloaded' (one of the problem games). My joy was short lived, however, when I discovered the 'ACLSyntax' txt file. According to that file, my version of DVD2Xbox (0.7.Cool contains all known patches loaded into its acl folder. Beyond those games that need a seperate .acl file (TOCA, Samurai Warriors), everything should be covered through the included 'default.acl'.

And here is where the mystery deepens. One of the games giving me trouble was Shenmue II; thankfully though, I already had a hard copy of the game to hand (a legitimate print -- not burned). Deleting the Shenmue II folder that my friend had left on the HDD, I proceeded to use DVD2Xbox to rip the files from my actual game disc. It worked perfectly; the game has loaded up every time I've tried it. Knowing then DVD2Xbox must have the necessary .acl file included to get Shenmue II working, I did a little test.

Navigating DVD2Xbox's 'File Manager', I went over to the new Shenmue folder I had just made and attempted to process the ACL through the method I described in my first post. No luck though -- DVD2XBox just crashed as it always did. My assumption has been that because my copy had successfully been ripped onto the HDD, DVD2Xbox would be able to process the acl for Shenmue through 'File Manager' (because it had already done so when I initially ripped the disc). All things considered, I have no idea where to go from here.

Anyway, to answer your questions:

i.) According to the 'System Info' tab in UnleashX, I'm using V1.4.

ii.) The Xbox is originally PAL, although through Enigmah's Video Select, I can change it to NTSC M.

iii.) Not working: 'Shenmue II', 'Conker: Live and Reloaded', 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds', 'Deathrow', 'Bruce Lee: Quest of the Dragon', 'Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis', 'Silent Hill 2' (amongst others).

Working: 'Black', '007: Nightfire', 'Fuzion Frenzy', 'Enter the Matrix', 'Call of Cthuhlu', 'Capcom Vs SNK 2 EO' (amongst others),

IV.) Yes. I had to download it (and switch my console to NTSC) so as to get the sound on the SNES emulation working in CoinOps 8.

Thanks again for your response, mate.
