HI ALL & SPPV: fellow CANUCKnuckleHEAD here, been watching your stuff and THANK YOU for ALL EFFORTS that I will be supporting in spreading the news of the orig XBOX wonder w/XBMC and more. I am eager to resurrect many busted and available cheap orig xboxs 1.1 to 1.6 crystals w/720P HD and see the need to use your XBMC-App Installer, and other tools like AutoBuilder, and other great info found here on XBOX-HQ.
I am a newbie to XBOX, but a HW tech and over the last year have learned to use XBOXHDM, Hotswap methods, format/rebuild, install and update to latest XBMC nightly to test them out. Where I live there are (3) xboxs to watch stored vmedia and I maintain/backup and update them with FTP and Win 7u. I will gladly be a volunteer to TEST out your releases and more to come ... THANKS THANKS THANKS .. again you make this life easier for some, so take time to ENJOY & KEEP Your HEALTHY LIFE too !!!!! CONQUER the "rat race" and "mickymouse freedom" ...
SPPV: I will be trying out the XBMC-App Installer beta, to test & review, while eagerly awaiting AutoBuilder v4, and arranging VIP Membership asap SOON, for the ongoing CONTEST ENTRY, also in support of yourself and those here on XBOX-HQ helping throughout your efforts and understated invaluable contributions !!!
NEED ADVISE/HELP:
Here is where I am hindered (stumped): got this XBOX with DEAD HDD:
Will the XBMC-App Installer (or suggest another tools) help recover EEPROM info with a replacement 40G WD hdd for this failed stock (seagate 8G HDD)? or need an eeprom reader & sw tool? configmagic? or xboxhdm? hdd unlock/lock utils?

If you can force an E12 on the XBOX (unplug the DVD) you can hotswap. See here for how to hotswap

Thanks SPPV for reply: I followed and reviewed the HOTSWAP which I was able to do, using AutoBuilderV3 to build the replacement HDD, but I do not have the EEPROM.bin; so after quit AutoBuilder and poweroff, xbox ide cable back to HDD and power off; on booting XBOX I get error 5 (lock/unlock) prob ...; so what next? I vaguely remember a unlock/lock function in CHIMP, a universal unlock "Team Assembly" - can you or others advise next steps?
THANKS XBOX-HQ TEAM !

Try to hotswap the original HDD so that you can get the eeprom from it. Otherwise you will need to make an eeprom reader

Thanks for the efforts SPPV
- this will not out workout until I get an EEPROM Reader for this XBOX unit;
as noted in subject: stock HDD failed with no eeprom backup
I do not have access to a CHIPPED unit to perhaps
bypass the startup hdd unlock dash boot ???
Wish there was some bootable CD/DVD SOFTMOD that would alleviate this
but I gather is not developed yet ...;
except the eeprom reader + sw util
I read other users here too with same situation
I will look into making the HW interface/EEPROM READER I saw on links
and other sites, or buy one from the UK on ebay for $20 CDN w/shipping.
I am gonna need this TOOL in my HW KIT to mod future units I encounter.
Your TOOLS/SW efforts will be DULY PIMPED Thanks AGAIN !

What happens when you turn on the XBOX? Nothing. Get an error screen, or just a black screen with nasty clicking or grinding sounds? Im asking because sometimes HDDs appear dead in the XBOX but its not a hardware failure but rather software failure

I forced an Error12 using replacement HDD, then used AutoBuilderV3 & TUT, to prep a MAXTOR 10GB as a "NEW DRIVE from SCRATCH" after a proper shutdown and reconnect IDE cable to DVD + power, this replacement HDD gives E5, as I am unable to recover the EEPROM.bin to complete SUCCESSFULLY;
The orig stock SEAGATE ST310014ACE will give this CLICK,
then odd moaning pitch BEEP, xbox logo shows for a period until E7,
so I reseated then replaced IDE cable to m/board, DVD, & HDD
- same results; pretty sure this seagate is gonzo, will not spin up fully !
I even tried out MHDD utils on this seagate w/out any success,
it tries to spin up (sounds like effects for old movie UFO), single CLICK,
then this odd beep. SO ...
I believe this requires the eeprom reader on this one; and will provide updates/progress.
Thanks TEAM XBOX-HQ: forahobby, sppv, and others tutorials/vids ...
- this XBOX 1.1 with a Thomson DVD, will be my test bed of learned experiences with the ORIG XBOX ...
and building an XBOX TOOL Case/Kit for more ORIG XBOXs,
I'll get my BoneCrusher hands on
as I got another 1.6 crystal + othes to learn soft-mod without
opening the xbox; but then again, these need larger HDDs to pimp them out!
BTW: I am familiar with XBXHDM 2.2a bootable USB
(where I can backup/transfer the EEPROM)
should I get access to the HDD ... to use on a rebuild per s/n.
I am sure I am not the only one who would like to see a tool to grab
the eeprom without opening the box, someday ...
Anybody got a bootable CD/DVD for an unmodded xbox with FTP & ConfigMagic?

You need to force the E12 on the stock drive not the replacement drive. E7 can be caused by 2 things 1)HDD not being detected 2)C drive files have gotten corrupted
And no there is no bootable disc at present for the XBOX. For that to happen would require the digital signature used to sign discs and have it applied to the disc so that it will pass M$ security screening

Thanks SPPV
I did try to force E12 prior to the replacement drive, as this orig is toast.
that's it for this HDD = E7 (failed to DETECT HDD):
- as it will not spin up to speed fully; begins click and beep, repeats.
The orig stock SEAGATE ST310014ACE will give this CLICK,
then odd moaning pitch BEEP, xbox logo shows for a period until E7,
but this HDD starts click and beep before E7.
- pretty sure this seagate is gonzo, will not spin up fully !
- it tries to spin up, but then single CLICK, then this odd beep,
and repeats click then moaning beep, repeat ...; - IT's TOAST !
(tho I will not toss it out just yet)
SO ...
I believe this requires the eeprom reader on this one; will provide updates/progress at a later date.
Thanks SPPV
