Hi there
A friend of mine asked me if i could soft mod their old box so that it would run emulators and the XMBC dashboard like mine. However it wasn't until i picked it up, i found it already has some form of mod chip installed. She bought it with the mod and wasn't told how to use it
I'm a little unsure how to proceed, as i was just planning on loading Splinter Cell, running the save game ect.
The xbox has a single LED fitted to the underside of the front panel, on the left side, there are also two micro switches. Through trial and error, working front the left. The first switch effects whether the unit will run original PAL games. I've not worked out what the second one does exactly, but in the right combination i seem able to disable to mod chip. It says the bios is Evox.
If anyone can offer me some info on the mod i'd be really grateful. Also advice on how to proceed with getting XMBC would be appreciated I'm pretty new to modding the xbox. Having only done my own and the GF's.
Many thanks
James

Hello,
I suspect the other switch is for flash protection
Download and use AID to install any Apps, Dashboards and Emulators to your xbox : http://www.aidtracker.com/
Put (from the AID disc) the MS dash and XBMC on your C: partition
then install any emulators or tools to your E: partition. (if its just the stock hard drive, if its a larger hard drive install your emus and tools to the F: partition) _________________

Hi there, i shall get a photo up soon. However i think i've identified it as a SmartXX v3 or a Duo X3.
There are actually THREE switches, i hadnt realised. But there are so hidden away under the front of the unit. You'd not know it was modded, save for the bright green LED. Which will turn red if you alter the arrangment of the switches. It says it has a Evox bios.
Is there any way i can find out? save taking the machine apart?

Taking the box apart in a bit, will be back with some photo's and hopefully a better idea of what i'm dealing with..Ugh why is nothing ever simple!
BTW i've looked at a lot of these mod chips with the bank of three switches and i've only found one that uses a single LED. The rest use one for every switch.
Cheers

If you are going to do anything modding wise with your xbox you need to know how to open it up, so this is a good learning experience _________________

That is true, and we can also give you the most up to date correct information about what youve got if we know what you do have indeed. _________________ Hotswap Tutorial|FTP Tutorial|HyperX Flashing Tutorial

Hi there, got a similar question! I've got a hardmodded xbox which I paid a guy to do for me. I didn't take note of the modchip he put in it, nor is it identified on any of our saved email correspondances. His email no longer works and his website has since been taken down so I'm at a loss to figure out what chip is in my box either. Based on this thread it seems like taking the unit apart is the only way to find out...is that right? Is there no way to access a system file or bios file that would give us the information? Further to that, if I do have to take the box apart, is the type of modchip usually plainly discernible?
Thanks for any help and would be curious to see what you came up with, hiddenevil.

You would need to pop it open so we can get a look at the chip. You cant go off the BIOS since many chips support/use the same BIOS's. Some with custom BIOS will give a message at boot up (like saying Xecuter instead of Microsoft accros the bottom) but that seems to be the really highend ones that cost a couple hundred bucks from what Ive seen in my very limited chipping experience

Hey all, back again after an extended hiatus -- never did get a chance to pop that Xbox open and see if I could discover what mod chip it's running BUT I happened to load up DVD2XBOX today and, when fooling around with the settings, under LCD discovered this:
Modchip: SmartXX
Type: LCD-KS0073
Now, I'm not running an LCD on this box but is this information a clue to what mod chip may be running in this sucker?

Ah, did some googling and it looks like that might be the default LCD Setting for DVD2Xbox....ah well!
