I'm trying to upgrade the stock fan to an 80mm Antec, but can't seem to find a good balance between fan noise and cooling power.

The temp sits at about 122 degrees F (+- 1 degree) with noise I can deal with. I tried bunping the fan from 40% to 75% (just to see what that kind of change would do), but that fan turned out to be a bit too noisy. So I took it down to 55%. It doesn't cool all that much better, but the noise is ok.

Any suggestions?

Oh, yeah. If you turn your fan around so that is draws cool air from the back of the box and blows it right onto to cpu, you can drop the temp about 5 degrees F (unless you are using some other cooling method). The only thing I am concerned about is dust.

I still run my stock fan at 20% and I usually hang around 134 degrees.

I always heard it was bad to turn the fan around, because you end up keeping more hot air in the machine, but if you noticed a drop then that is good!

I thought the fan worked by pulling out the hot air and pulling cool air in the side vents.

I used XBTool to change the speed.

If you turn the fan around the cool air hits the CPU first and then gets pushed out the side vents (you can feel it). But if you leave it the stock direction the cool air hits the power supply, HD and DVD drives before getting to the CPU.

I left mine in the stock position, but bumped the speed up to 54% from 40%. The temp stays at about 122 degrees F.

I tried an 80mm fan but had to bump it up higher to get the same effect. Very strange.

Latest Changes...

Ok, I turned the fan down to 45% using XBTool. My new dash is UnleashX for the simple fact that I can change the name of my XBOX within the dash, I can change the fan speed, the LED color, etc.

The fan speed is changed between 1 and 5 ( in increments of .5). 5 is loud, but cools really well. 1 (at 45% from bios) is quieter and keeps the cpu around 124.

If you need some quick cooling just turn the speed up a few points and let it sit for a while.

I used a 12 volt fan mod with LED, and my temp stays around 112-115. and that is only bumped with 10% . But I also took out the metal casing around the fan, and also the vents in the back I trimmed off oand made flush, the only thing is, if you pick it up from the back, be warned, your fingers are gonne get hurt pretty good. I also have a 200 G hhd, thats just about maxed now, except about 22 G.

What is the 12V method? It that were you remove the black wire from the connector and solder it to the metal part of the case?

I should probably try that, but the fan doesn't fit very well anyway. I have to finess the cover back into place and I don't like that. I have also removed the metal section of the case where the fan is, but left the plastic part that protects fingers as well as some of the metal from the side vents to create a bigger opening.

The highest the temp gets is when I boot with the chip disabled. My box gets to about 127 degrees. Not too bad. I've heard of higher temps with no problems.

i used the tutorial in this site to do the fan, of course you have to file down two sides of the fan but after that it fits great, plus with the vent cut out, that I did it gives more light behind my box. Yes you have to put the black wire sodered to the metal but that was simple. just make sure before you zip tie it in place it is facing the right direction of blowin out. if you try it good luck it took my 45 minutes to do, including the cutting.

You don't happen to have the tutorial do you? X-S seems to be down or something. I'm not able to access the site.

I remembered the tutorial. I tried it, but the results weren't good. The MB temp rose to the same as the CPU rather than staying at about 106 degrees. Everything seems to be working fine with my setup so I will just stick with it. Thanks for your input.
