Cut a gash in my thumb so deep you can still see the scar.

I have 3 scars on the tops of both my hands, a scar going halfway across my back at the waist, a couple on my knees, and a wicked scar right below my hairline all from getting hit by a van when i was 15. _________________

The first thing I do when taking apart a xbox too clean it is take the heat shield out. It is pretty useless and holds dust like a mofo. And the xbox will run fine without it trust me. As for battle scars my pride and joy is a 45 bullet hole on my left upper leg. I got it while doing absolutely nothing wrong. (cough) Anyhow just wanted to put my two cents in about the heat shield thing

Can you take the whole shield out? like even the bottom on too? or can you just take the top plate and the one around the disc drive?

You can pull the whole thing you just need to remove the mother board and give it a tug, use a screwdriver to lift the tab that hold it in.
