I have never ever ever ever heard of replacing the jewel without taking the case top off.
Basically, if you just want to replace the jewel (no lights)
Then what you have to do is take your case top off and pry the metal heat shield off. There are little clips that you can bend back to make it easier to pop off.
Once you are done with that use a blow dryer and heat up the underside of the case where the jewel is.
Move it around alot and be sure not to warp the case ( pretty tough to do, but I have to say it so nobody blames me for warping the case)
I had to do it for about fifteen twenty minutes before the green jewel was pliable.
Once you think it's hot enough, just use a butter knife and start to try to push it under the jewel. Work it back and forth, being careful not to hack up your case.
If it doesn't seem to be working, heat it up more.
Once you have it off, you can put the green jewel in the freezer for an hour or so. That way you will be able to remove the nasty black glue that is still on it.
If the jewel you bought has no adhesive you will need to use some type of glue or adhesive to affix it onto your case top.
I have just purchased seven empty xbox cases...should be shipping soon.
I am going to bling bling them up and sell them. I'll post pics or links soon.

I HAVE heard of removing the jewel without disassembling the Xbox, but it sounded VERY DIFFICULT and DANGEROUS (Don't scratch or crack that case)! It sounded like a lot of prying and I think this method often results in a broken jewel... not a big problem unless your goal was to clear the jewel and reinstall it!
I have NEVER been successful getting the jewel off.
I've read NEVER, EVER heat it up, it just makes the adhesive stick harder, so I tried their method... put the cover in the freezer for a while, take it out and beat the inside of the case just beneath the jewel with a hammer. I beat the carp [sic] out of it! Jewel never even budged! Oh well! If I ever get my clear Xbox cover, it needs a jewel, so I'll be set!
I'm game for heating the sucker up! Freezing didn't work for me! _________________ The World's Most Awesome Xbox 360 Room

I can get them off in about ten/fifteen minutes.
Use a blowdryer on the underside...whoever said that it makes them stick more is smoking crack! PS. Send me some..hehehe.
Anway, once you have it heated the butter knife working side to side really stretches the jewel in an outward direction...then it just lifts off easily..
It took a little heating, prying, heating prying to get it totally off.
Then I put the green jewel ONLY in the freezer so I could peel off the black crap left on it. There was no black glue gunk on the case, it pretty much sticks on the green backed jewel.
Then, using some acetone I simply wipe the green off and run it under water after each wipe so the acetone doesn't mark the acrylic jewel..below is the result.
That was the ORIGINAL green jewel that I removed from an xbox case so I could cut a hole in it and replace with a lit jewel. Actually, it was jiggysmb's jewel I think...I can't remember if he asked for his back or if it was someone elses. _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter

I find the freezer way works the best
Put in freezer for about 30 mins to an Hour depending on the freezer, I find my small freezer built in to the top of the fridge works a treat.
I use the end of a screw-driver to tap it out from underneath - A large rubber handled electricians screwdriver to be exact. A rubber mallet with roughly the same diamater as the xbox jewel would be the best tool for the job.
Just remember that the Xbox case has to be nice and cold. So cold that if you dropped it, it would shatter (so dont drop it) and dont go bashing it like its offended you either, just a gentle tap should do it. And make sure you do it over carpet or over something soft, I cracked a jewel once because it tapped off and hit my slate floor.
after that just follow forahobby's simple paint removal/acetone method.
Hope I can be of Assistance

I never tried putting the casetop in the freezer...not that I have any room in mine...HA. Too many french fries!
I'd be too scared of cracking it!
