A few of my friends have been playing games like Super Mario 3 and Sonic and some of the older games on their Xboxes by downloading ROMs from the internet and then transferring them to their Box. Now, my question, is how? Do you need some sort of Modchip or something? When I copy the files onto CD and try to load them with my Xbox it says "Unreadable CD." If anybody can direct me to a website that can give information (or has the information themselves) it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Noob001, welcome to Xbox-hq! We'll get you squared away with the correct information. To play anything other than xbxo games on your machine, you will definitely need to mod it.
There are two types of mods. Soft mods (which are mods made using software exploits) is one way, but you won't find much info here on that. It's not a widely used method. I cannot vouch for how reliable it is.
The other method, and the most popular by the way, is to install a modchip in your machine.
Once a modchip is installed you can load a bios into the modchip (called flashing the modchip) that will allow your xbox to read many more types of media. You can put emulators on disk, and include the roms too, and put the disk in the xbox and play. Or, you can install a larger hard drive and put the emulators and roms right on the HD so you never have to put a disk in your machine again! Now, the newest version of Mame-OX that just came out can only play on the HD, but most other emulators will play off of disk.
You will also be able to backup your xbox games right to you HD too. That means you never have to worry about scratching disks! Back it up, put it away for storage! You can also install apps that allow your xbox to do various things like play dvd's without the dvd kit, play dvds from other countries. Install apps like XBMC (xbox Media Center) that let you watch DivX movies, play MP3's, look at pictures, slideshows, streaming video and radio.
To be honest, there's not much you can't do once you have your machine modded.
Think about what you really want out of your xbox. Then let us know and we'll point you in the right direction or answer any questions that you still may have.
Good luck man, keep posting...and again, welcome to the site! _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter

hey noob01,
Just like realmccloy says mate.. You need to mod your xbox..
I would suggest purchasing a modchip!
Once your xbox is modded (modchipped) you can then play backups, Emulators (snes, nes, n64, genesis), and other homebrew apps on your xbox just like your friends.. Ask them where they got theirs done!
