I'll leave it to the discretion of the moderators to determine whether or not this is worth sticking.
As you may or may not know, an XBOX HDD needs to support ATA security to lock, similar to the way TIVO machines and DVRs from your cable or satellite provider work. And, as you also may or may not know, the process of finding a HDD can be hit-or-miss without a bit of help, which is why the XBOX-HQ community maintains a database of which ones have been found to work or not to work. This list has, without a doubt, helped many people in finding a new HDD for their XBOX. I've consulted the guide a few times to help me find good HDD's to buy for people that want me to fix their XBOX.
However, we all know this list isn't completely fool-proof, and with rising prices for shipping of goods, a bad purchase can, and sometimes does deter people from unlocking the potential of their XBOX completely. To that end, I submit a file that's useful for not only your PC, but can also help greatly in identifying lockable XBOX HDD's. The tool is called AIDA32 - a PC disgnostic and identification utility that I personally swear by, so much so that I install the utility before I even drop in drivers for a new computer.
Download and install the tool, then shut down and install the drive you want to check for XBOX compatability. After you've restarted the computer and you're back to desktop, run AIDA32, then go to Storage, then ATA and look in the checklist in the lower frame. If "Security Mode" is checked, then you should be good to go.
If everything goes well with the new HDD and you've successfully locked and tested it, then come back to add it to the list maintained here at XBOX-HQ.com. I hope this helps people create XBOX HDD's successfully, and saves people some cash on bad buys in the future.
Also, keep in mind that since TIVOs and DVRs require security, you should be able to use the HDDs from those units in an XBOX. I wouldn't condone ripping apart the nearest device to find out, but if you happen upon a derilect DVR or TIVO, give it a shot. _________________ XBOX V 1.0 (softmod)
