Hi all

I have a crystal Xbox bios 1.6 previously softmodded with splinter gamesave using Sid method
I turned it on this morning to hear a god awful noise from the harddrive and an error code 13 if unlock HDD (disconnecting the cd drive method)) and connect to pc try and use Xplorer 360 to take a look there are no partitions and no files i am having a few problems

1. If it use xboxhdm 1.9 on a usb stick or cd i can boot it up press number one then i get error can not find Linux cd i have tried a usb and sata cd drive and get the same problem.

2. I do have another harddrive to replace it with but i am unable to find a clean image of the harddrive to rebuild when i get my xhdm working.

Please note if do have my HDD key backed up

If it put a game into the drive i am able to play it and seem to be able to have a save game file

If the HDD has physically died, that's it. Whatever you do on Xbox or PC you're not going to be able to recover the data on it.

Is it still spinning up without the nasty noise when powered? If so it might be worth searching for information about how to recover data from a dying HDD and try some of the techniques suggested.

But short of paying, a lot, to a data recovery company to get the info off the HDD you will probably just have to accept that it is gone.

However having sensibly backed up the the eeprom prior to this you should be able to build/install a new HDD one way or another using XBHDM.

I've always worried about HDDs dying like this. My own method of minimising that kind of disaster is once the original retail HDD is softmodded I immediately install a new bigger HDD using the latest version of Chimp.

The softmodded retail HDD is then carefully stored as backup.

Windows knows nothing about Xbox FATX partitions. Any recovery tools for Windows will not help. They are not windows partitions but fixed sized areas on the HDD that the Xbox's BIOS knows the start and end sector number to access the contents.

Google search "Clean C and E files for Xbox" should give you a link. Xbox dashboard - D:1.00.5960.01

HDD Content access try:
XboxHDM23USB Beta 2 or Beta3 (Xbox Softmodding Tool included for installation to HDD with B3)

Copy the EEPROM.bin backup -- renamed to all lower case eeprom.bin -- and place on thumbdrive in subdir where xboxhd.bat (startup batch file for XboxHDM23USB) is located.

Beta2 requires a PC with IDE interface.

Beta3 can be used with a USB to IDE or SATA adapter to connect Xbox HDD to PC if your PC doesn't have an IDE interface.

Either can format a new HDD for the Xbox and rebuild (install MS Dash) and lock HDD. Beta 2 needs files from C and E added to the provided subdirs and Beta 3 already includes dashboard files (i've been told) and 2017 release of Rocky5's Xbox Softmodding Tool. (Updated softmod no need for good ole SID anymore.)

I have tried this on an XP and Windows 10 pc still won't find the drive

Does the drive have to be unallocated space or does it need to be fatx

Is this correct?

I ask because, surely, the whole point of XBHDM23USB is that it can be used via an IDE or SATA HDD > USB adapter and doesn't need a PC with an IDE interface.

That had long been the problem with the well meaning recommending use of the standard XBHDM. Most people now are using laptops/notebooks/tablets etc and desktops with MBs that have an IDE interface haven't been the norm for a very long time..

As I understand it Beta 3 is Rocky5's "I just cleaned everything up" version.

Only thing I thought XboxHDM23USB was is a version of XboxHDM that can be run from a thumb drive. No ISO creation, burn image to disc and boot PC with it to unlock/access/build/lock an Xbox HDD.

And with Beta 3, Rocky5 cleaned up the menus and ldotsfan updated/added drivers to support USB to IDE or SATA adapters for access to the Xbox HDD since laptops and many new computers no longer have an IDE interface.

Update

Guess the USB version Beta 2 is not exactly what I thought it was.

Rocky5 posted on xbmc4xbox forums, "You can also use "XboxHDM USB 23 Beta 2" this allows you to build new drive via a USB to SATA or IDE adaptors, so no booting into Linux."

I've used the Beta2 version before.

IIRC, running xboxhd.bat should start either version of XboxHDM23USB from inside Windows.

A menu should appear to start the process:

1. unlock the HDD,
2. start phase 2 - start a Linux VM with FATX filesystem support and file manager execution.

Once in phase 2, the Xbox drive's FATX filesystem contents can be accessed from MidNight Commander (MC = file manager). From MC, you can copy files to/from the PC and Xbox HDD.

After closing MC, another menu should be displayed to lock Xbox HDD then shutdown/exit XboxHDM.

I'll have to find my USB thumb drive with XboxHDM23USB Beta 2 installed or reinstall on another to verify these steps.

I've looked at but not used XBHDM 23 USB Beta 2/3 and as kas_engr's links to Rocky5's comments about it I'm not sure that I understand exactly how it is used even now.

I thought the whole point of it was not having to boot into a Linux environment and you could just connect the Xbox HDD via USB to a PC, run the program and it would allow you to build a Xbox compatible HDD.

Problem is that there doesn't appear to be any tutorial provided with it and Googling returns few useful results either.

So determining what the Lillew's problem is here is beyond my knowledge.

If someone does know of a XBHDM 23 USB Beta 2/3 user guide please share because I'm sure it would be appreciated.
