I have been modding with modchips for years. gave it all up and threw my xbox away. Yeah, a boneheaded thing to do. What can I say the family was doing some extreme cleaning. Anyway I have used SID to softmod my first xbox which is version 1.1.
All is good. I have now been trying for DAYS to upgrade my HD. Yes my hard drive is supported. In fact I have a couple that are supported. The problem Is most forums tell me to use CHIMP. I have tried that program all kinds of ways. I know I am doing it right and have the jumpers right. no matter what though Chump will not read my FATX. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there an alternative to chimp that works better?
Again thanks in advance,
Danny

Sorry to say but that tutorial linked too is wrong if you're using an installed version of Chimp.
First thing to mention is that you must use Chimp2618 (or the beta Chimp261811) if your Xbox is a v1.6. Install it in E:\Apps. There are other earlier Chimps but this is the only one that will work with all Xbox versions.
Second thing make sure the linuxboot.config file is copied to the root of the E:\drive and is pointing at the correct path to Chimp. The beta version of Chimp261811 that I found recently included the original Chimp2618 linuxboot.config file and so was pointing at an incorrectly named file ie. Chimp2618 rather than Chimp261811. This reulted in an error message with Chimp stalling on the start up screen. Editing the text file was the simplest solution.
Third thing, and this is where that tutorial is wrong, you DO NOT launch Chimp and then swap the IDE cable from the disc drive to the new HDD. That only applies if you are using the LUD ie. disc version.
With Chimp installed as an app simply boot to your main dash (UnleashX or whatever) then, no need to rush, swap the IDE cable carefully and cleanly. Once done then launch Chimp and all should be OK.
Two other possible problems that frequently cause trouble:-
1). Not using an official MS Xbox controller. No idea why this is a problem but according to those who know more than me about this say it is.
2). When using a SATA HDD with IDE adapter it is recommend you use a replacement 80 pin IDE cable rather than the original Xbox fitted one. Some IDE adapters apparently can a cause of suffiently long enough delay to provoke a timeout error. Again - just passing on received knowledge.

Thanks for the heads up mate.. It's been quite a while since I've upgraded a softmodded Xbox. I've installed modchips in nearly every single box, so the process is so much simpler for me.

Dam that's near a tutorial in itself.. Feel free to submit it to our database for future reference. I've been schooled! lol
