Can someone provide a list of places that still sell modchips?

Based on what I've inferred from similar questions like this there are still some around, but most of the sites that sold them are either gone or moved on to other systems.

If you're simply looking to mod your console a softmod will be a suitable replacement.

The one advantage a modchip offers over a softmod is that if you want to do a hard drive upgrade, then you need the EEPROM key from your xbox in order to lock the HDD.

Otherwise a softmod should have all the same features that a modchip would.
The only two things that make softmodding somewhat tedious is finding an original xbox memory card to put the softmod exploit on or a compatible USB drive.

^Using an SD card and USB/SD reader removes the issue of finding a compatable memory device. Ive got a small box full of SD cards (256MB-4GB SDHC) and they all work.

The other thing modchips offer besides the no eeprom is editing the boot screen and allowing you to have more than 1 HDD hooked up and switch between them without shutting down and switching cables.

The problem you will have finding a modchip is that coutries where the best sites for them were have banned modchips. Its now illegal to sell them in Canada, USA and UK. Best bet is to find a reputable site based in Australia.

^^ hardmods are cool don't get me wrong but if you haven't the skills or ADVANCE knowledge on how to outfit one, it's probably best if you put the modchip away til you study for what's entailed (and that can differ for each type of modchip vs the version of xbox motherboard you have)
ONLY PROFESSIONAL ELECTRONICS EXPERTS should be outfitting them as you'll be putting both the xbox and modchip (not to mention potential personal injury) AT RISK!
...........
bottom line is, leave the hardmods to the experts (not me that's for sure) and stick with a simple solution like the SOFTMOD!
(if you know a professional xbox modchip outfitter then go for it but study up on it first if you decide to solder it in yourself...it's VERY difficult work and there's NO margin for error)
.......
get SPPV's BABYLON softmod archive (onsite) and use that! Razz
it's easy if you study the enclosed documentation and tutorials!
look at the "BABYLON" thread to give you an idea...
the archive itself comes with all the required info within it from scratch!
..........
all the best! Smile Razz
[edit]
the BABYLON archive comes with a computer app to make a disk so you can UPGRADE your hdd (assuming the thing is compatible) via an ide/pata compatible computer!
have the console EEPROM.BIN to hand and take it from the top....Cool

^^ mostly, it's down to the actual computer itself to be able to LOCK the hhd when a successful build/upgrade is achieved!
....
generally, most SATA (serial ATA) based computers are a non go but if you have an INTEL based computer, even if it's just straight IDE/PATA, it can lead to the hdd NOT being locked and a LOCKED hdd is ESSENTIAL for it to work (NON hardmodded) on the xbox it was built for! (the eeprom.bin that's used to LOCK the hdd to the console it's going in)
...
it's quite old bit reliable, take a look at THIS xbox hdd compatibility listing!
that's SPECIFIC to hdd's known to work/not work on the xbox AFTER it was successfully LOCKED...luckily those are few and far between but it's more the COMPUTER you need to be able to LOCK the hdd!
please don't ask me what computers are compatible but for the most part, as long as it's not an intel/HP POS, you should be cool to go for it!
.......
if your hdd ISN'T on the list, it won't hurt to try anyway! Razz
......
1, get console EEPROM.BIN to hand on the computer...
2, get the BABYLON archive, unpack it and read the instructions....
3, run the "babylon.exe" and make the appropriate choices...
4, when you have a finished "linux.iso" imagefile to hand, use IMGBURN to write it to the disk, set program to 8x write speeds...
5, when disk is written, reset the computer and go into the BIOS setup menu and set it to
primary boot device = cd/dvd rom (that's it BUT knock off ALL other boot devices, they WON'T be needed for the xbox hdd build! make sure the hdd and cd/dvd rom is seen in the BIOS menu, ONLY on the first ide cable/flyer, set cd/dvd rom jumper to MASTER and the target hdd to SLAVE, disconnect all but the cd/dvd rom and the hdd)
good luck! Razz

Confused
NOPE!
not touching it...sorry! (chimp is unstable and i DON'T recommend it's usage, others can assist should they choose!?)
i have little experience with it and what i've tried didn't turn out well!
.....
in all my years using an xbox, it was mainly the "sid" range of softmods that was easiest to use....(and NEVER had an issue to date) then BABYLON came along and was so easy to use, a spanner-struck retard could use it, it REALLY is that simple! (and for the purposes of this thread, i'm the spanner-struck retard!) Evil or Very Mad
.......
that's all! Razz

@SPPV,

Had no idea people used SD cards to softmod an xbox! Nice!

Only read about people doing that to load softmod files onto a Wii.

Guess you learn something everyday.

Does any SD card plugged into a USB adapter get recognized by an xbox?

If not, what types would you recommend people new to xbox modding try. Are there any lists on the internet? Saw someone recommend an SD card mod on TiZ when I googled.

I'd like to make a full step by step tutorial video on how to softmod an xbox.

Since it's hard to acquire original xbox memory cards nowadays and compatible USBs are also a pain to get to work. This SD card plugged in a SD/USB male adapter sounds great.

@kc01713

Sorry about double posting, but I wanted to make two separate posts covering different ideas on this thread.

If you want to use a 500GB PATA hard drive I found just the drive for you on amazon. Granted it is a bit pricy ~$175, but it's better to buy a new drive in my opinion. That way your less likely to have acquired a broken one. Don't buy refurbished drives! You won't know their history. They could have been broken at one point in time. Best to pay extra for a new one.

The link is http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-WD5000AAKB-internal-Packaging/dp/B000Q85WIQ/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_3/186-8833392-5399910

The model number is WD5000AAKB and it will be compatible for EEPROM locking. But you can check for yourself by following these steps:

If you go to the search bar of the HDD compatibility list, you will see a dropdown menu for HDD brand names. Choose WD Caviar Blue and hit the search button on the far right. You will then see the WD5000AAKB model number as being lockable, which means it will work in a softmodded xbox.

Let us know if you have any other questions along the way.

Happy modding!

^^ NO!
not just "ANY" card or reader will work, it's the same as the 4g or less usb cards in terms of compatibility hit/miss ratios!
.....
SPPV has had plenty of luck using an sd card and usb reader but me on the other hand will NEVER try it again!
i made a thread at (SPIT) TIZ (can't recall it's name) where i warned the boards in general to "try it at own risk"...
basically, i somehow (and to this day, i don't know how) F*CKED the C:/ volume contents....(BSOD/loop on powerup and reset) essentially temp-bricking my xbox!
i was able to rebuild the hdd using the usual routine but it pissed me off something chronic, i've NEVER tried it again...and nor will i care to...unless i get a used KNOWN working set off somebody trusted! (once bitten, twice shy! aka: learned from my mistakes)
.....
please bear in mind this is NOT to undermine SPPV in any way but give you a heads up on my personal experience! (this was before the likes of XBMC/babylon installer ever showed up, early days of me meeting SPPV actually)
you don't have to take my word for it though...
slam just ANY sd/usb reader in (4g or less) and if you get unlucky, don't say i didn't warn you so!
1, i will work...
2, it won't work...or...
3, a temp brick...keep the babylon/XBMC installer to hand just in case you do BSOD the f*cker! Confused
