I wasn't sure were to post this so I put it here. Anyway, my prob is that my dvd tray doesnt like to open if there is a disc in it already it will usually open but if there isn't one in it it wont open at all. I can hear it trying to open and you can see it move a little but it wont open and what I have to do is pull on the front of the tray when I push the button and see it trying to open and it opens. I have heard of people hitting the top to get it to open but that doesnt seem like a real good idea for the harddrive. Its been doing this for a while now and I am pretty much fed up with doing this to change a disc and was ondering if any one knows what the problem was its been doing it ever since I took it apart and adjusted the laser to get it to read my games again which it reads great now I just cant get the damn tray to work right. I have also tryed changing the tray motor from one of my parts drives and it still does the same thing. Any ideas guys?

no it does the same thing but its easier to give the tray a little pull to help it open. it doesnt take much to open it just a slight pull then its like as soon as the laser drops down out of the way it comes out the rest of the way fine and i think when i took the top of the drive off it worked ok but i cant run it like that or the disc just flops around

You may have a worn belt at the front of the drive. Try cleaning it. It may have been contaminated with dust or grease when you adjusted your lazer. Don't over stretch it if you remove it for cleaning.
Tip: There is a small hole under the tray half way to the right from the center. If your tray is stuck. you can push a small rod through this hole to open it.
Hope this helps.

Does it open if you smack the top of the box? If it does then its just the magnet is too strong. I've had like ten of them I've had to fix. Just take the drive apart and put some electrical tape on the sucker and trim it up real nice.

Use the tape to cover the little white disc in the lid, not too much, its still got to spin.
When you clean the rubber belt, stick it in a cup of boiling water for a couple of minutes, this gives it a little more tension.
If non of the above work, hold the lid with both hands and apply a little bit pressure with your thumbs (where the red arrow is on pic A) to put a very slight bend in the top of the case, not too much, only a slight bend, so it looks something like pic B, then re-assemble it. If you can hear the disc flapping about you`ve bent it too much, reapply pressure on the other side untill it sounds smooth.

Thanks guys that did the trick. It must have been the belt was a little dirty well more like a lot dirty I could see the dust on it lol so I put it in the boiling water like you said and that seemed clean it pretty good and tighten it up a bit and it worked like clock work but just so I dont have to take it apart again any time soon I did the tape trick too. I think I'll take a look and see if there are any tuts. and if not I'll put one up there for the more visual people that aren't sure as to what to do, I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem especially now that these units are starting to get pretty old. Thanks again guys I appreciate the help now I finaly can use my xbox without fighting with it lol.
