I recently bought a modded Xbox for a bargain of £20, however it absolutely reeks of stale cigarette smoke!! The fan was caked in something I'd rather not describe! I took it apart and tried to clean everything as best i could and also took the fan out and cleaned it but it still smells. Can anyone offer any advice? Someone suggested a cup of vinegar inside the unit overnight but not sure how that will work... Really gutted as I love my new Xbox but can't stand to have it in the living room with that smell!

As weird as this sounds, have you tried opening up some febreeze, pouring on a cloth and just scrubbing some of the components with it? That stuff seems to get rid of everything! You can always place, like Wes says, fresheners inside your case.

The smell comes from inside the Xbox itself.. The fan was caked in nicotine fluffy dirt that was fairly to clean off but didn't cure the problem. I think the smoke must have been sucked into the unit as the while innards reeked!
Anyway, I've managed to improve it loads by taking one of those JML vacuum seal bags, placing Xbox inside with the lid off little bowls full of white vinegar sat besides the Xbox - zipped the bag up and left it for 24hours. Apparently any odours are absorbed into the vinegar - kind of worked but not fully... For good measure I placed a couple of tumble dryer sheets into the casing when I put the cover back on, although this laundrette smell was a little overpowering! Took the sheets out a few days later and it seems better now.

Glad to hear the smell is a lot better. Its something so simple, the smell of your Xbox, but it can really put you off playing it. Good to hear things are better.
