Ok, i had this problem yesterday which I have no resolved, it was wierd so thought I would post it up here, I still don't know for sure what was wrong tho.
Basically I had a few 1.6 crystals to modify, with DuoX2 chips and 200GB Seagate hard drives.
Chip went in fine and worked perfectly, fitted the hard drive with no problems. Formatted the drive etc and installed linux on E andEvox on C.
I use Avalaunch to copy files from one xbox to another, now I had 185GB to copy over so a fair chunk.
I copied all the apps over first and they went fine, the copy of avalaunch I ftp'd from my pc and I know works fine.
Anyway while copying it kept failing on this one file after copying 3.5GB, so it was only a rom so deleted it, and it failed on the file after, so I thought I would just copy the games over, again it failed on 3.5GB. I reformatted the drive and copied everything from scratch leaving out linux(to save time). And guess what? I had the same problem, I was running the M8 lba48 bios which I also know works fine, but reflashed it anyway, also set the Hard drive to master instead of auto.
And I had the same problem, thought bugger this and went on the same xbox with exactly the same spec, everythign copied fine, went back to the forst and still not working.
so i swapped the hard drives over, the first xbox with the 2nds hard drive worked fine, and the 2nd xbox with the 1st hard drive copied fine without freezing.
So it could not have been the hard drive, cable or bios or my formatting.
I have done sh*t loads of xbox's in this same way without problems.
No the xbox is working with the pre-copied HD from the other machine but don't want to let the customer to have it until I figure it out. It has to be something with the xbox and not the hard drive.
Any ideas anyone?

That's a strange one for sure. If I have learned one thing from modding it's nothing ever goes exactly quite the same, and there are truly things that have no freaking explanation.
