few quick questions on how to solder:

1. Does the wire have to be touching the connection point or can the signal transfer through the solder itself?

2. Does the amount of solder on a connection change anything?

3. Any general advice? I haven't soldered before, but I'm looking to get into it.

Does the type of solder matter? Lead/tin/silver? Width?

The signal can go through the solder. The solder makes a joint that promotes continuity.

Yes. If you put too much solder on it, you can bridge another solderpoint and create a short so to speak. If you put too little solder on it you can have gaps in your LPC point and not get a good connection, losing your continuity.

Take your time. Practice. Start off practicing with a 15 watt iron soldering LED's and wires to LED's. Then move up to a 25 watt iron and practice on PCB's.

People have different views on this...some people say only use a 15 watt iron when soldering a pinheader to a mobo, I say use a 25 watt. The hotter the iron the quicker the solder will adhere to the joint. The better connection you get, the less time you have to heat the spot. I get more frags when using 15 watt than 25 watt. I never use the 15 watt anymore unless it's for soldering wires to LED's and stuff.

Use hydrogemonic X247 solder in it's inert state. Just kidding....couldn't resist. I just use Radio Shacks Rosin-Core Solder for PC work. I try to find it at .022 or .015 thickness, but .032 will work good, just be careful.

later man
