Hey all, has anyone ever had their PS just up and crap on them.

After I finished the 1.6 from hell last night I did another 1.6. This one went flawless, up till now.

After I flashed bios, loaded AI, and loaded Emu's I shut down so I could FTP roms.

Well, after shut down I went to power up and I have nothing! No power whatsoever. Dead in the hole!!!

Give me some ideas what could have trashed the PS so when I replace it with another the same thing doesn't happen

Why doesn't anyone ever answer MY questions...HA... Laughing

Okay guys...here's the deal. This I guess is happening to a lot of people with the 1.6's.

Next to the Xyclops chip on the lower left hand side is a resistor labled 2T. This resistor is for the standby feature. Using a multimeter test the collecting point at the resistor and use a ground like one of the mobo screws/holes. You have to have the mobo and power supply in the case and the power supply plugged in...BE CAREFUL.

If you have 3.25 volts as a result then you are okay and have another issue. If you have less than 3.25 volts than the resistor is bad. This resistor can go bad just from removing or playing around with the mobo!!

Most people replace it with a 2A resistor instead of the 2T as they tend to be more toerant.

So, I am off to find a friggin resistor....

wishing I had a dead mobo to use... Guess I get to learn how to replace those..HA

Do you have a photo of this resistor?

Also, let us know where you pick it up and how the replacement goes!

Good point Xboxter!! I'll take a photo of it now and add it. So far, I know of a company that sells in bulk. It looks like I am going to have to buy 6,000 of them!! Kris at xboxrepairguide.com told me he'd split an order with me so I just may end up doing that so I can sell them from my site because I have a feeling the more 1.6's that get out there the more this is going to happen.

What pisses me off is, I did deeyou's 1.6 last night and had to pull that mobo out four times...here I get one on the first shot and it blows the resisitor!!

Okay, here is the shot. It's a little blurry. Didn't feel like hooking camera up again..HA.

Anyway, the resistor is labled 2T and should be replaced with one called 2A as they are more tolerant.

I have a machine here that went down for my brother, just a DVD Dirty Disk error. I am going to swipe a 2A resistor from it and see if I can handle this puppy!

The chip that it is near is called Xyclops. It's on the lower left side.

Basically, the more mods you do the more likelyhood you are going to run into this issue. Xodus has even taken the time to put out a manual called "Xbox 1.6 Resurrection". So it must be a widely occurring issue.

Catch you all later!

UPDATE:

I removed the bad resistor. It wasn't too bad, it just took some patience. I used desoldering braid and carefull removed the solder holding the resistor down. There are three points. The legs on the resistor are very very very short, so try to keep iron away from the actual resistor.

Even after you remove the solder, there is still solder on the bottom of the legs holding it to the mobo. Just use your fingernail and gently pop it off.

This looks like a bugger to solder on!! I removed a 2A resistor from another mobo..so I am going to try to solder it in place... looks very difficult. I desoldered using a 30 watt iron. I am going to solder this on with a 15 in hopes to have a little more control. Also using very very thin solder!

Alrighty.. joy joy joy...

Did I mention joy!

It was actually harder to remove the little bugger from the other mobo than it was to place on the new one!

The key was laying down a little bead of solder to each point that the resistor was going to be soldered to. There are three. Make sure you put down an even amout so the resistor will lay nice and flat.

Lay down the resistor on the three pieces of solder and make sure that each leg is touching. Using a precision screwdriver, like the ones you use for eyeglass repairs hold the resistor in place. Then just touch the top of the legs so it melts the solder underneath. The first time I checked it still didn't work, but I found I needed to place more solder on top of the legs to finish the job.

The funny part is, after I put the solder on top of the legs I unplugged my soldering iron. I then put it all backtogether and fired it up. Still nothing. Very dejected I ordered a new mobo online.

I then opened a box of another machine I got today to mod so I could tear it down and have it ready for the a.m., but since it's a customer owned xbox I always check them to make sure they work prior to opening the machine. When I plugged in the power cable and tried to fire up machine I had nothing. I looked down and noticed that I didnt unplug the iron..I unpluggd the xbox power cable!!

Oh well, I could always use a spare mobo.. Embarassed

later all..I'm going to bed!

Going to bump this topic. I have just received a VIP ticket where this has just happend to two machines for the same person in the last 48 hours.

If you guys plan on modding 1.6's...you need to get some backup resistors...

Let me know if you need the company. Try to find someone to go half with you as they only sell in lots of 3000 at .06 each.
