Im modding a friends xbox. He wants a 200-250 Gig HD. Im going to do all the installation stuff for him but he wants a hd model that is cheap, and i want one that runs well. Im going to softmod and install unleash X onto it. Can anyone find me a reliable HD model # Company and how many gigs it is for a low price? _________________ kills more noobs then random grenades

try tigerdirect.com or pricewatch.com. They are always running deals. Or you can go to staples and maybe get a western Digital or Maxtor. Both are good and very reliable. _________________ Moddingbandit
I do softmods and solderless chips only. Just Pm me for details.

If you buy a hard drive from Ebay, just be careful you don't buy a locked one.. Other then that Ebay or Newegg are my two favorite places.. _________________ Xbox V1.3

I dont know how "cheap" these are, but my favorite HD is Samsung. They are so freaking quiet!!! Peformance wise, you won't notice any difference as far as loading apps and such, or even gaming. I just enjoy a quiet drive. If you pop a Samsung HD in the Xbox and run it with the top still off the machine you still cannot hear the drive...that's how quiet it is! _________________ Xbox 1.4

I got a western digital 250 gigs for artound 120 bucks. I love newegg but some of the prices can get pretty high. I probably should have posted a topic similar to this when i was modding my box. It would have saves me a couple bucks and got me a bigger drive. Its not a very big deal, but my hd is 250 gigs but i can only get 230 gigs out of it after using xbpartitioner. When i ftp it to my comp it shows the max capacity of the drive being around 242 gigs. Does anyone know a way to fix this without deleting all my shiz? _________________ kills more noobs then random grenades

No, you'll always lose gigs depending on partition tables and data info. The advertised size is never what you get, unfortunately. You're getting what you should, though. In windows, my two 250's only run about 233 each. My 120 I think i'm pulling 116 or so. It all depends on the size.
As far as the best drive, though, go with Maxtor, even though they're going to get more scarce with the damned merger with Seagate. DiamondMAX's are freakin' tanks and if you get them from Tigerdirect, they'll usually come with a warranty.
The only other drive i'd ever suggest is Wester Digital. They forever have been the king tanks of all HDDs. I dropped one out of a second story window, it hit the ground hard, I went out, picked it up, buffed out the scratches (yes, scratches, not dents, not gouches, not having to put it together) and put it back in my box. That was 5 years ago, and I still have that HDD. It now resides in my xbox, spinning as fast as the day I bought it.
Yes, WD's are tanks, and they will not go under. Not bad for one of the longest running HDD companies on the market. _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."
