An article in Adweek quotes Massive Games CEO Mitch Davis predicting that in-game advertising could near $2 billion dollars in advertising revenue annually by the end of the decade.

Keep in mind, that Davis' company, Massive unveiled their in-game advertising network, which allows companies to place different ads in video games and shuffle those ads in games that use the Internet. So his numbers could lean on the side of optimistic.

Some readers may remember the controversery Valve was embroiled in earlier this year with an in-game advertising company inserting ads into Counter-Strike.

In the future, gamers may be inundated with more advertising in their games. Hopefully, publishers will license out space in these games in a non-invasive fashion. It'd be one giant mess if in-game advertising degrades to a point where picking up an item results in an ad popping up interrupting the experience. However, if games will include more product placement, like the movies, as long as they aren't huge, out of place, flashing billboards saying "Buy This, It's Sweet!" - it shouldn't be a problem.
