If I wanted to upgrade to a better DVD Rom drive, do I just unplug the IDE and Power cables and plug them into the new drive?
Do I need a firmware/software update?
I am using the Xenium ICE chip and a 250GBB HDD. I have the latest BIOS and OS.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Can't I just get any DVD Rom from a computer store? Or does it have to be "Xbox compatible"?
Also, could I somehow get a DVD-R/RW drive for my XBOX?

There are only 3 Retail Computer DVD-rom drives that will read Xbox games.
You need the xbox firmware on the DVD-rom to read the games. The firmware is chipset specific...meaning that you have to make modifications for those drives to work.
Those drives are:
Samsung 616T(orF/B)
Philips ?
Hitachi 8163B
And the specific firmware to match. Otherwise its no good to you, they are NOT like HDD's. _________________ XBOX v1.6

I have one of the first XBOX units I think its either 1.o or 1.6 anyways. It uses a philips dvd drive.
I modded it a few years back with a MATRIX and use EVOX - it has worked fine all these years.
Recently we moved countries and am now in an area where the voltage is 240VAC 50hz. But my box is US standard.
Anyways I use a stepdown converter but I think some trace voltage (because of the difference in Hz) finally managed to zap the DVD ROM
THe unit boots and gived DVD error
I put a SAMSUNG DVD ROM from a PAL based Xbox in it and it boots and works fine - except it wont play any of the original game discs (none)
I havent tried any of my burn disc yet.
In any case - I thought if you swapped DVD ROMs with Xbox ready units it was a straight up no issue. Any ideas? Is there some setting in the init files I need to change (I mean the replacement unit came from another XBOX which had a fried powersupply.
In any case if there isnt some quick fix, I guess I will just get another philips drive and go from there.
