A 15-year-old schoolboy who murdered his elder brother when he deliberately set fire to their family home in a row over an Xbox computer games console has been imprisoned for 10 years.

Matthew Stringer, then aged 14, launched a revenge arson attack after his family took away his Xbox as punishment for stealing from his elder brother Craig, 24.

He set fire to the family home by pouring white spirit in the hallway and stairs and set it alight by throwing a match through the front-door letter-box. He walked off leaving those inside to their fate.

The three bedroom semi-detached in Kitchin Road, Wombwell, near Barnsley became an inferno trapping six people inside.

Matthew's brother Adam, 15, died from smoke inhalation. His badly burned body was found in the bunk bed where he slept in the same bedroom as his three brothers.

Matthew's mother Karen Stringer, 44, his brothers Craig and Gary, 20, sister Jade, 13, and Carys Harrison, 18, Gary's pregnant girlfriend, all escaped with various injuries after jumping out of first-floor windows.

Sheffield Crown Court heard how Matthew calmly watched from the street with his arms folded as the blaze claimed the life of Adam.

Gary told the court: "He was stood about with his hands in his pockets and did not seem bothered."

Matthew will be detained initially in a secure unit for young people for a minimum period of ten years until he is considered for release.

The judge Mrs Justice Cox said the boy's distress was evident when found guilty but she told him: "The evidence against you in this trial was consistent and compelling."

Matthew had denied murdering Adam and one offence of arson endangering the lives of the other five trapped in the building but a jury found him guilty of both counts after a seven-week trial.

Mrs Stringer, who suffered serious burns in the fire and needed skin grafts, comforted Matthew as he sobbed uncontrollably in the dock on Wednesday afternoon after the jury's verdict.

He appeared for sentence flanked by his mother and her estranged husband Graham. She rested her head on his shoulder and cuddled Matthew as he was sentenced.

The court heard that Matthew was grounded by his mother after he was cautioned by police for stealing £5,000 from Craig who had entrusted the youngster with his cash card.

A furious Craig said he would sell Matthew's Xbox to try and recoup some of the money.

Mrs Stringer told the jury: "He was going to sell the Xbox to get some money back."

Craig began ignoring Matthew and Mrs Stringer was unable to discipline the 14-year-old who had offered to repay the money once he got a job.

Prosecutor Rodney Jameson QC said: "The defendant appears to have resented the reaction of the family to what he had done." Matthew developed a "cocktail of grievances" against his family and said he hated them. He told his best friend the day before the tragedy that he was going to burn down the house and kill his mother.

A schoolgirl told police: "He said he was fed up because she was selling off his stuff to repay his brother."

Matthew's behaviour had deteriorated since his father split up from his mother after 24 years of marriage and moved out.

The teenager began abusing and assaulting his mother. He started smoking and was once caught smoking cannabis in a shed with other boys by anti-social behaviour officers.

Matthew stole from Craig who was quiet and hardly went out as he worked long hours at McDonalds to build up savings so he could get his own place and go to college.

The youngster spent the stolen cash on clothes, drink, cigarettes and fireworks and offered cash to whoever took his fancy to try and buy himself status at school. His mobile phone was always well in credit.

Just days before the fatal fire early on November 3 last year Matthew had begun starting fires in the neighbourhood, behind a shed and in a skip.

He also told his mother he wanted to go and live with a friend. She told jurors: "He told me: "If I had a gun I would shoot you." Adam always slept underneath the bedcovers and on the fateful occasion had his headphones on.

"It may have prevented him hearing the shouts of the others," said Mr Jameson.

Matthew, who was described as of below average inteleligence, did not give evidence in his own defence in court.

He lied to police throughout a dozen interviews, claiming he had been helping a friend with his paper round and returned to find the house ablaze.

He also said he owed cash to a drug dealer and had left the house after stealing from his brother to pay the debt.

Both stories were disproved and traces of white spirit which was used to start the fire were found on his trousers.

During tape recordings of his interviews played to jurors he constantly denied his involvement and said: "I didn't do anything. It wasn't me." When asked by officers about his home life he admitted being a "bit angry" when the family took away his Xbox as punishment.
